    South East Oklahoma wheeling trip/pic

I finally went and explored part of the K Trail this weekend. A friend and I went and combined the trip into some fishing at Beavers Bend. I have been wanting to get up there and would like to also organize a meet so I figured I would try it out first before taking a group up there. I would really like to make it back up there with some of ya'll.

We started our adventure just outside of Clayton, OK around 4:30 on Friday. The plan was to travel east all the way to highway 259 and camp 1 night along the way. It turned out to be about 100 miles of narrow trails. I would like to say this trail could be done in 2wd but that is not the case. For the most part I used 2wd but there were places where 4x4 was needed. Plus if there was any rain, 4x4 would more than likely be used the majority of the time. The trail was pretty easy to follow but think we might have got onto another trail for a few miles. I say this because a few miles before we reached Indian Highway there were several hunting shacks and we had a weird feeling about the shelters and people we saw.
The trail is VERY narrow in several spots and you WILL get some "custom pinstripes".

We traveled about 2 hours before setting up camp for the night. Friday night started off chilly with no wind but that changed and became very windy and cold. A nice fire and warm sleeping bag made for a comfortable night despite being in the mid/upper 30s.

The next morning we woke up and broke camp knowing we had a long way to go. We hit the trail around 9:00am. We made it the only paved road(Indian Highway) around 10:45 and crossed it to continue on the trail. When it became lunch time we started looking for a place to stop. This is where we ended up. It had amazing look outs on booth sides since we were pretty much at the top of a peak.

Our trek continued after lunch where the elevation continued to climb. It was not too long before we were above 2000 feet elevation. Not bad considering we started around 800 feet.

Around 3:00 we came to the lookout tower. There was a family on some ATVs that had stopped for some pictures. They had come from the opposite direction and said we had 10-12 miles before we reached 259. We took some pics and got back on the trail.

After the lookout tower the trail became wider and a little easier. For the last 5 miles or so the trail is maintained so access to a cell tower station is easier.
We got to 259 around 4:30 and the trail continued if you crossed the highway but we had plans to meet another friend at Beavers Bend so this is where we got off the trail

The trip was a blast and we took our time to check out some views. It was about 8-10 hours of driving.

    Here are some random pictures

Ok, we'll have to get a trip planned for next fall when the leaves change again (and I'm hoping my 4Runner will be up to the trip by then also). How did the spare tire rack hold up on the trip?
If you go off roading and you don't break something or get stuck - were you really off roading???

The tire rack did great and served its purpose. Those pins we used to hold it in place on the side need to be rethought since once either got pulled out or vibrated up. A few screws will be in order.

A fall trip would be good but I would like to get up there in the spring as well.

Still want a couple pieces of 2" angle? I can use my tap and die set to tap the piece of angle so there would be no nut necessary.

The Spring would be great; just means I need to get my stuff together and rebuild my motor asap so I know I have a dependable motor on the trail.

I think I am going to leave it like it is since it held up great and took A LOT of bouncing around.

I'm glad it held up to the trail beating. How did you pack the truck for the groceries, shelter, and recovery gear? Anything you didn't take you wish you would have?

The back seat was full of most everything that we didn't want to get wet since there were rain chances on Saturday.
I wished I packed some lop ears to clear small limbs hanging too far onto the trail.
I packed extra gas and didn't need it so that will be taken off the list.
We had that big cooler by the tail gate and held drinks and most of the food. Next time I would take a smaller cooler since that one takes a lot of ice and gets heavy.
A chain saw might be something I would bring next time. There were a few spots where trees had fallen on the trail at some point and would be impossible to clear without a chain saw.
Also I would be sure to bring enough coffee for both mornings. I could have really used some this morning.

We should have felt it where we were but were too busy finishing a bottle of Crown to notice.

You should have a great time. Just remember the trail is very tight in a lot of places and the sides of your truck WILL get scratched. Extra gas should not be needed if you fill up in clayton. I used a little more than a 1/4 tank to reach highway 259.

I don't think I'm going to do it over thanksgiving. I don't trust doing this trail with 1 truck & no backup...
