    06 Tacoma 4th gear noise

I just purchased a 06 Tacoma reg cab prerunner 4cyl 5spd. When I shift into 4th gear at lower RPM and under load, there is this loud rattling, grinding noise. once the RPM's are up and i'm going a little faster with less load, it goes away. I have read that some clutches, other than stock, will do this. I have never heard a clutch make this much noise. Any one have any issues like this? The truck has 33's and 4.88 Nitros. The guy i bought it from put in the gears, and replaced the clutch with an aftermarket unit.

To clarify: there's no noise at idle with the clutch out?

Pretty bad ass that you picked one up. Are you going to keep the pre-runner?

These trucks have crazy issues with Driveshaft angle even from the factory. It could be that. That's what mine was, but I thought it was the tranny or t-case and chased my tail for months trying to fix it. I finally got rid of the "grinding" noise by getting a CV driveshaft from thrash and shimming up the rear axle. I might still have some spare shims from ToyTec

My tranny had some shifting issues, and was a little loud for my taste. Once I put some redline gear oil in it, it shifted great and was alot quiter; even with the short throw shifter.

Red line severe gear? What weight?

I didn't put the shockproof stuff in the gearbox, though I thought about it. I used the 75W 90 NS, but their MT90 would probably be a better choice for long term use since it's not as hard on the syncros.

Try some good gear oil. It makes all the difference. I used the Heavy Shockproof in everything else (both diffs and t-case) and it worked great reducing alot of the noise. It's just not designed for synchronized gear boxes

I buy mine in bulk from Amazon because I get free 2 day shipping, but otherwise I would order from Jegs

The noise is only in 4th gear, and only under load at lower RPM's. The angles on the drivetrain are pretty good. The only lift is a front revtec in coil spacer, and a 1.5 add-a-leaf in the rear. The rear end and trans oil was just changed with mobile one 75-90. It's very strange. I bought the truck in Cali, and drove it here. The noise has not gotten worse. I may just put a few more miles on it, and drain the trans and rear diff. See if any parts fall out.

What happens if you put a bunch of weight in the bed (changes the driveline ange)

Mine behaved very similarly when I shifted into 5th, there wasn't enough power to the driveshaft to make the noise. It had to be the right speed AND RPM combo.

I'm not saying that it's definitely the driveline angle, but it's very likely. Mine started after I got the rear leaf TSB. It sounded for all the world like a grinding noise coming from the tranny or t-case.

The lift was all messed up when I got the truck. Icon coil overs in the front, adjusted to 2.5 lift, no lift in the rear, and a hard shell bed cover. I took out the coil overs, put in TRD front with in coil spacer, 2 inches of lift, and a rear add-a-leaf, for 1.5 in the rear. The noise is the same as before. But I did get a nice set of Icon's for my FJ.

    nice

I wish I still had my truck so you could borrow the driveshaft. It's one of the few things I left on the truck when I sold it

I've still got a spare t-case from when I was trying to fix that noise in mine

And I removed the bed cover. That thing weighed like 150 lbs.

Try removing the rear driveshaft and driving in Fwd. If it's the tranny, it will behave the same

It's a Prerunner. If I remove the rear shaft, it won't move.

I read on one of the forums, this started when the clutch was replaced with an after market unit. When they replaced it with the stock clutch, it went away. How likely do you think that is?

Hard to say. If it was the clutch, I would think it would be RPM dependent and not gear/ speed dependent

So it would make the noise in every gear at the same RPM
