Southern AZ --> CA expedition March ___ ?

Murphy mentioned hed be down for cruising and wheeling Gila, AZ following the Butterfield Stage route to Yuma, then following Ted Kipf rd n/w out of Yuma along the Algodones dunes to Niland, continuing n/w along the Salton Sea arriving at Indio, CA.

Things to stop and see along the way (w/b following but not on I-8) include;

-Agua Caliente (north of interstate 8 west of Gila, AZ)
-Butterfield stage route in the Dome/Ligurta mtns east of Yuma
-Yuma territorial prison
-Mission de Winterhaven
-Colorado river pipeline bridge
-Algodonoes dunes (Glamis & Clyde...scenes from Star Wars filmed there)
-Calipatria farm lands
-Salton Sea
-Kaiser Steels former Eagle Mtn railroad @ Ferrum, CA. (junction and mainline north along the Salton Sea)
-date palm forest of Mecca, CA (yumm, tasty date shakes)
-Box Canyon (scenes from star Wars filmed there)
-"Angel of the mountain" on San Gorgonio mtn near the original site of the Southern Pacific railroads Palm Springs station


Heading back to PHX via I-10 there are;

-Patton tank museum at Chariaco summit, CA.
-ancient geoglyphs 9 called "the Blythe Intaglios" north of the the freeway at Blythe, CA.


This could be a balls to the walls two day trip or an easy take it as we go 3 day trip. I'd like to do this when it warms up and the days are longer...but not 100+ degree heat either. Id like to do this before an east coast RR hires me. Lets look at some dates in March and see what we can come up with. I wont have my ATO bumper, so my lightforces wont be wired up.

I figure if Paul wants to cruise out to Welton, just east of Yuma along the Dome/Kinter/Fortuna/Ligurta mtns we can cruise the Butterfield stage route. Check out some shit in Yuma likethe territorial prison, the mission, and the big railroad bridge.

From there, the All American canal is a neat thing to see. lots of nomads and snow birds park their rigs to squat near the canal...we wcould venture further west and find a suitable camping on the north side of the rr tracks near Algodones, or glamis on the rr along Ted Kipf road.

it'll be some pavement hopping here and there until we reach ted kipf road...then we dont see pavemtn till Niland. not sur ehow much of the butterfield stage route you can drive anymore...when I did it with my dad in the mid 90's there was alot less going on in the area east of yuma.
