Have you torn off you bumper mounting plate yet?

Boy there are some days that I wished I had one of those 15 peice bumpers! A friend may have had half of it in his back window but I would have less creative work in front of me!

I have my real bumper in the back but in the front, with the crumple zone stuff I am thinking, "How do I really want to do this?"

I think my best route is to make a plate that goes 10-12" down the frame and pretty much forget about a crumple zone. I've really got to take the bumper all the way off and do a little noodling.

On the same note my winch wasn't working. I think it may be time for a Superwinch.

I think I may switch to fishing!

    Fishing is boring.

I would say screw the crumple zones, but It might make the air bags more prone to go off? Not really sure what triggers them.

I don't think it's accelerometers that trigger's them. But that's a great point to keep in mind.

Fishing? I do it occasionally but I need to be sedated if you know what I mean!!!

Pretty sure the airbags are set off by an accelerometer and that there is no crumple sensor or anything. That being the case, removing the crumple zone would definitely make your airbags easier to set off.

Is there any way to just repair the mount without bracing it against the frame further back?

Yeah, I think I may put a zig zag in there but I am now going off memory. Hopefully I can pull a day away from work this week and pull that thing off. I want it to be strong but where do you draw the line... I'd be fine if I could lift my truck 90 degrees while hanging from a tree!

Plate the frame with some 3/16" back to the first UCA mount, then make a new mounting plate out of either some gusseted 3/16 or 1/4" plate.

As I wake this morning... I'm thinking take the current plates off. recreate the plate in 3/16. See how close I can get a rectangular tube or make one that will go inside of the frame rail with the plate mounted to the tube. But that may change!

That might work out well. You might have to have some custom piece of box tubing made up. I'd then bore several 1/2" holes into the frame so you can rossette weld the inner box in place from the outside. I also think it would be a good idea to plate the outside frame rail as far back as you can go. Because in theory all this is doing is moving the point of failure farther back along the frame rails.

See if you just had an AP bumper you wouldn't have this issue, it would have folded over first.

We are both thinking the same way. Strong but how strong. My problem is that the strenth of the SW would only be matched by a boxed up frame out of thicker stuff that's there! I guess my poser status just got challenged by this weekend! Sean, I hope it makes you feel better about your bumper! They were only making an "equally weak link" for our truck!!! Design Perfection!

Good idea on the outside frame plate too!

I just got off the phone with Shrockworks.

I was trying to buy some new brackets to complete a reconstruction of my front end.

I was all set up to give him my credit card and he stopped me and said,

"Can I ask why you need these?"

Then I told them what had happened and how the bracket had bent about 15 degrees and he said the same words that Chase said about my rear end, "I'm impressed!"

He then told me that he would ship me a pair for free.

    That's when I said, "I'm IMPRESSED!"

I think we need a Vendor Hall of Fame! I guess if we're going to do it right, a Hall of Shame would be entertaining if nothing else.

PLATE THE FRAME AS FAR AS YOU CAN ALL OF IT WOULD BE BEST, I learned this lesson the hard way with my chevy which already had a pretty stout frame from the factory and some awesome bumpers on it and the frame got broken when I got rear ended and pushed into a vehicle in front of me.

I had the same problem with my ARB on my 01 DCab. I replaced the frame and you can see on the old one how messed up it looks, the nut inside the rail is literally popping out. I'm it occurred when I was pulling someone out with the winch. I'll post a pic of it, I'm planning on reinforcing the bumper with some new welds on the new frame.
