    Homemade Rear Bumper Part Duh

Made another one. Perhaps can offer some ideas and possibilities to others with self-fabrication interests. Unlike my first that bolted onto a stock truck, this one is a full wrap around bumper that required the bedsides to be cut.

-The bumper mounts are 3/8" steel that protrude through the outer skin and become part of the shackle mounts.

-The towing receiver cross member is 2.5"x2.5"x0.25" square tube and the receiver itself is a 6" pre-made store bought.

-The 3/16" outer skin had holes cut into it to slip over the shackle mounts and receiver.

-Once protruding through the outer skin, the 3/8" shackle mounts were sandwiched with 3/16" pieces. This totaled 3/4" thick shackle mounts and it was all welded into one solid piece. The skin was also welded to the receiver.

-The side plates are 3/16" and have 1.5" square tube legs that go to mounting plates bolted to the frame right in front of the back leaf spring bracket.

-The 7-pin plug is mounted in the face of the bumper and the license plate lights are LED's embedded in the top mounting screws.

-Various gussets were added in places for strength and it got a couple coats of Rustoleum primer and flat black paint.

    Thanks for the compliments!

Drew, for the record, I said "Duh" as in dumb, not "deux" as in French for two.

I have no plans of making any more rear bumpers any time soon. Is 10" how much you bobbed? How did that ever turn out? My front bumper is next. I'm guessing it will look pretty Relentlessy. We'll see.

Yeah, I think the relentless ones look nice. I'm a bit crazy in the way I've made my bumpers though. I don't have any true plans or vision. I just start at the mounts and work my way out while keeping in mind certain features I want and styles I like. As I go, new ideas pop up and compromises might need to be made. I won't even really know what it looks like until its done. Bit of a risky fab technique but it has worked out ok for me so far.

That's the way that my front is going to be. Picking up the tube on Fri and will start the fab on my weekend, so Monday. I'll start a thread once I start and keep everyone posted.

The bumper looks sweet Greg. Hey could you send me some pics of the way you fabbed the mounts.

Which mounts you talking about? The main mounts for the bumper of the mounts for the side plate? My second bumper had mounts more complicated than the first. You should maybe consider the route I went with my first bumper. The main mounts are just 6"x2" channel and it incorporates the factory tow receiver nicely. There are a lot of pictures of it on its thread. Let me know if I can help you at all. Here's the link and there are more detail pictures in my gallery.

No, but I can get one. Let me finish the fender flares though so you can get the full aesthetic effect. Yesterday I cut them the way I want them. Today I'm going to paint them the same flat black as the bumper.
