Got rear ended. Need new bumper. Want opinions.

I got rear ended on my way back from Moab, and the truck is at the body shop getting the estimate put together.

I'd like to go ahead and upgrade the rear bumper instead of going back to stock, and I really wanted to get an Armor Tech Offroad high clearance wrap around. However, Kevin's lead times are looking like late August, which is a bit much.

    Option A:
Buy a junk yard rear bumper for who knows how much. Get on ATO waiting list. Get bumper in August, junk the junk yard bumper. Or I could try and hammer out the beat up one.

    Option B:
    Something else.

Anyone have thoughts on which rear bumper to get?

Damn that sucks, did it push the bed up against the cab?
Option B, because INS is going to pay full cost of a new bumper, just pay the difference to get an aftermarket bumper.

Yeah either way I'm only going to pay the difference. (hopefully) I just wasn't sure if there was another option. I may talk to a local shop about fabbing something custom.

The bed did contact the cab slightly, but just enough to scratch it a little, and a really minor dent. Nothing terrible.

Kevin does good work and is worth waiting for.

If you can't wait, CBI makes something similar with a quick turnaround...

I think it's about 1 month for turn around time....

    WOW! That sucks!!!

If you are going to do a lot of off roading, you can't (IMO) beat Kevin's bumper. Otherwise, if you are not getting a high clearance, get something that will protect the overhang on the quarters - the get smacked pretty good when off road.

Do Armor Tech, It's worth the wait. Like you said, you can get a junkyard bumper while your waiting.

Better option though... Caged rear with flatbed!

look into Relentless Fab, he is doing both high clearance and standard bumper. From what I have seen he does great work, and I think his turn around time is a bit quicker the ATO.

I will probably get flamed for this..... But All-Pro does make a pretty good bumper too with quarter panel protection, seen it up close and the 2nd version ones are solid.

Don't listen to Drew, he hates Canadians...something about bacon being ham and the syrup being too thick. He's always singing this song when we wrench:

Yeah, I guess I have 2 strikes against me... 1st being Canadian and 2nd cause I mentioned All-Pro.

If it makes it any better I have actually been to Texas and would love to move down there one day.

But back on topic, if you can keep your old bumper they are surprisingly easy to bend back into shape, I pinched mine on a winch cable, and with a rubber mallet and a pair of vice grip pliers I was able to bend it back almost to stock appearance.

It would be a temporary fix till you got the insurance money to put towards an aftermarket one

I've really seriously toyed with the caged rear end. I'm just not sure I want to give up the (kinda) stock look for a while though. It was pretty cool having a lot of people ask if my truck was stock at Cruise Moab. I think it's kinda on that knife edge of "just right" for being clean, but fairly capable offroad. Though you could argue that doing bumpers is going to throw it off anyway :P

If you want more drama, I'll add that the guy who hit me has been my best friend for the past 16 years. We rented a u-haul, loaded up the stuff out of his 4Runner, and towed it back to Dallas, TX from Farmington, NM. I can't be too mad at the guy, insurance is fixing everything, we're all fine, and the trucks can be repaired.
