    Leaking Pinion Seal

Ok, I have given up on the useless forum..... I came to the real experts.

So my issue is that I am pretty sure that the pinion seal on my truck went, based upon this picture, and the noise that is coming out of the rear of the truck while driving over 50 km/h (30 mph).

The truck is a 09 Access cab SR5 and has 119,800 km (74,400 miles) on it and I am still covered under ECP (extended warranty)

It goes into the shop today to get looked at, but the kicker is that most of the parts wont be in stock so, Im going to order them on my own, so that I can get my truck back before the weekend (vs. waiting till early next week)

I was able to find this wonderful link and image (see attachment)F802090.gif, but I just want to make sure I am ordering the right parts from the dealership so that my truck is back on the road before the weekend.

    Toyota Part Sales Pinion Seal

I am thinking I need to order:
    17 - Front Pinion Bearing
    18 - Front Pinion Seal
    15 - Rear Pinion Bearing

I tried searching on stupid site, and just found that they were useless.

    Thanks guys

Did you try to simply tighten it? I've had my rear end leaks on occasion and I just tighten it up.

Haven't tried that yet, but based upon the amount of spray around the axle and on the underside of the box, I think it was a pretty major seal failure. I also think that the bearing may have failed too based upon the vibrations and noise I'm getting out of the rear end.

If the pinion is loose it will make noise.

Which part did you tighten Sean? I was told that in the companion flange the nut is crimped to stop it from becoming loose.

On the Raisin when its pinion came loose it leaked like hell! I just pulled the driveshaft off (just the 4 bolts by the pinion) and then torqued the pinion nut back down with a 30mm socket. Then be sure to stake it with a punch so it doesn't back off again. But that nut thats crimped (its the nut that needs to be staked back down) can still come loose.. mine has done it a few times. I am tempted to put a spot weld on that damn thing.

I hear that having a solid spacer helps keep the pinion nut from backing off. Maybe call ECGS and see about buying the spacer from them and having your local shop install. Fix it right and fix in once

This is a stupid simple fix, order a new pinon seal kit, (I wouldn't bother with the dealer stuff as it will be the same as the aftermarket just more expensive). Pull your drive shaft, un crimp the pinion nut and remove it take not as to how many revolutions it takes to remove the nut and remember that number, then pull the flange pop the old seal out put the new seal in and put it all back together in reverse order spinning the pinon nut the same number of revolutions plus 1/2 a turn extra to get the preload back in check (a little extra preload isn't going to hurt but too little will so a little extra is preferred), stake the pinion nut back and you're all done. Oh you should drain the fluid before you do this as it will come puking out on you if you don't.

If you staked the pinion nut solid it's not coming off, only reason seans fell off is because it was never staked in the first place.

It's actually a notorious problem with the 8" diffs

    Thanks for the info guys!

Yeah the seal from the dealership is all of $20 so probably just go OEM.

It sounds like the nut did come loose (might explain the hum), so hopefully its a quick and easy fix.

Well if it's humming, your fucked pinion preload is all out of wack if it's humming likely crush sleeve failure, time for a rebuild before the gear set grenades.

If it's still under warranty take it in to the dealer...........

Or order a replacement 3rd setup by ECGS and get new gears if you want them!

So yeah.... still haven't heard back from the dealership, so I called and got this "They are still trying to figure out what is wrong" so I'm either getting blown off or I have stumped the techs.

Might have to direct them to do some online research, but all I know is that I will be yelling and demanding full warranty since it doesn't look like my truck will be back today.....

So I heard back on Friday about my truck (at 4pm when it went in at 7am....) and the hum was actually from the driver side front wheel bearing, so good news on the rear (not so good on the front) and yeah, the pinion seal is leaking (NO Shit Sherlock...)

The best news is that they are covering it all under warranty The downfall is that they keep my truck till Tuesday afternoon.... so getting to work Tuesday will suck on my bike

I am going to stop in tonight and chat with them regarding the rear axle, I want a full check done on the bearing and gears since they will have it apart anyways.

Again, thanks for all your help guys, you gave me lots of ammunition to use against the dealership to get them to double check things.
