This was a quick weekend "overland" trip to test out the new (to me) tent and other gear. I purposely brought more gear than I needed to try everything out and see what I actually need.
I wanted to try out Angelina National Forest since I'd never heard of it or been to it.
We started off at Jasper Co Line Road. There are multiple "trails" and little nooks and crannies to explore. I wanted to kayak down to the abandoned railroad trestle but the river was flowing too fast and the drop off point I wanted to use was blocked off.
Not my pic
All of the brush was too much to mess with or try to get around. I'm certain this was left here as a road block on purpose.
So we drove around and explored the other little trails and just cruised with the windows down. This was my first road trip with my new suspension and I was loving how it was soaking up the washboard roads.
We finally decided to camp out at Boykin Springs Park which was $6 a night and was a nice park. So we set up camp and got a good fire going. You can use fallen wood that you find lying around, although you do have to explore for a bit as the area around the grounds have been picked clean of wood.
Camp the next morning.
Camp packed up so we could head out to do the 2.5 mile Sawmill trail.
The Sawmill trail is an awesome, beautiful hike! I highly recommend it when the weather is nice. No ATV's or trucks allowed, however you can bike it and horseback ride it IIRC. I want to go back and do a trail-run there as well as mountain bike it.
This is the prize that awaits you at the end of the trail.
Each one of these bolts is 1.5" OD. Pretty heavy duty!
