TRD OR locker question

SO im just curious to know more details about the factory rear diff. lock in the TRD OR pre runners as i have one. So i know that the vehicle is supposed to be stopped before you engage the locker. After that i know you are not supposed to go over 25 mph not exactly sure. What happens if you do go over the max speed? Does it mess up, or does it turn off by itself? The reason i ask this is because i went to the beach yesterday and had lots of loose sand. While driving not more than 5 mph i hit some sand that was very loose and kind got stuck. So i decided to engage the locker and i kinda floored the accelerator and i believe i hit around 20 - 30 mph with the wheels spinning and the truck moving slowly got out, seemed no pressure at all on the truck but wanted to see if doing that was wrong while the locker is engaged, will i break something if i do this again or will it automatically go in some kind of safe mode

Its not so much the speed that they're worried about. It's the sudden traction that could be gained at speed, which will sometimes cause a ring and pinion failure.

Just be careful with the throttle when you're using it.

i c thanks for the info. I drove the truck 3 hours at up tp abt 80 mph and everyhitng seems to be normal. Put the locker back on and it works as well. So i guess i didnt break anything. :)

I've driven mine over 55MPH with it locked. I just didn't try to engage it at 55 MPH.

I would add that another general concept is "Mechanical Empathy." In other words, this is not your mom's station wagon - don't use the accelerator like a game joystick. The truck may not be fragile per se but if you treat it as though it is fragile you will have a more enjoyable experience. Alternatively, you could be like me and replace nearly everything. :o

ha ha i dont really use it as if it was fragile and thats why i floored the gas and my rpm was up tp 6 and it got out with no issues soon after that my speed was 5 ph and i could feel the locker at work. when on paved road, i turned it off and everything seemed normal. Thanks sean, drew and Roger for the tips.

But you had the linelock and the bleach bottle with you that day.

lol Funny you say that. My buddy and I play this game.. we like to do burnouts in each others driveway. :) I did a patch in his 10+ years ago in my Dakota RT that stayed on the concrete for 2+ years. Anyhow, he's repaid me multiple times. Once the marks where actually visible in a Google Earth zoomed in image, no bullshit. lol Anyhow, I had just rotated the tires on the taco and the fronts had that little cupping they do. So I backed into his driveway, locked it up, and did a nice little burnout... to you know.. even out my tires a bit. :D

bs it was Faster than that.

That was on a hill country expedition trip with the Central Overland guys, just an oh shit faced when 15 trucks are caught trucking across someones deer lease and they showed carry guns. who needs maps and gps, just one truck following another like ducks in a row, blind leading the blind.

AKA "The official Helen Keller Overland Trip" lol

lol Yeah, got the locker stuck engaged one time.. on the trip mentioned above. Damn locker motor had burnt contacts.. I rebuilt the thing when I got home. Worked like a champ after that.
