Building rear bumper

tex

That's Mr Asshole to you
So I was talking to the lady that sits next to me at work and found out her husband is an underwater welder/fabricator. She said he can pretty much build anything. I asked her to talk with him about building a rear bumper for my truck. Not sure if it will work out or not but its worth exploring. I had a few questions and ideas I wanted some opinions on.

What kind of steel should be used?
I would like for the license plate to be on a hinge and the receiver to be behind it.
Thought about having 2 oval cut outs for reverse lights but not sure yet.

If anyone has ideas for features or design please chime in.

Most bumpers are built from 3/16" plate with 1/4" mounting points and 5/8" shackle rings. Just make sure that you get the dimensions on the reverse lights you'll be using before hand so you don't end up with a hole bigger than your light. Also, are you thinking about wrap around any? Are you comfortable/would you want to cut your bedsides?

I used 2x5 3/16" tube, and 3/16" plate for the main structure. 1/2" I had laying around for the mount points, doubled at the ends for the shackle. You'll have to dig up my build thread on TW, I cant access it anymore

I dont want to cut my bed up at this point. Having the reverse lights in hand before cutting would be a must.
I figured 3/16 was the standard but wanted to make sure.

I will search TW for your build thread this weekend to find some pics of your bumper.

Are you going to build any kind of swingout on the bumper?

Swing out could be an option but it's not super high on my list right now. Looking for something stronger and gives more clearance.

I would go with 1/4" inner structure, 3/16" outer, 3/4" thick d-shackle mounts the go completely through the outer skin and tie into the frame/inner structure. I have other ideas but they would require cutting of fenders.

im looking to do the same thing. Not sure if I wanna use plate steel or a tube style.

I've been contemplating dumping the creation on the back of my truck for some 2" .25 wall tubing just so it will have a cleaner look.

Krookz is still there. I found it.
Somehow my account got half unbanned, couldn't edit or post but login. Saved my pics and reported that douchbag chris4x4 and he deleted my account. Everything I ever posted is gone... hah! Hope no one wanted those event pics or threads

Let me know if you still need some shots
