Don't forget to update this thread after the summer heat's here. This was a trend that started on the Supraforums and TONS of guys upgraded their clutch based fans to dual Flexalites w/ shroud built in and almost ALL of them either went back or regret doing the "upgrade".

Kruso

Why did they regret it?

Prob because they couldn't keep up in the heat, I don't think our second gens will have the same prob because we are able to pull in more cool air across our radiators then a supra can.

Could be the massive amounts of boost they like to push through those things

This could also be true. My Ford work truck has factory electric fans and I can let it run all day with a/c on max during summer and it never gets hot.

Sounds like you know from experience lol

It's not the massive amounts of boost, it usually happens sitting in mid traffic on hot days. On highway they're fine. The Tacoma's also come with a much larger radiator so that might not be an issue to worry about.

When I used to work for Holden (the Aussie GM that developed the G6 /Commodore and the new Camaro) we used to have some cars that we rigged windshield sprayers in front of the radiators to cool down if we needed extra help! They work very nice!!

That's something to think about but would have to upgrade into a bigger washer fluid bottle.

Back when I was a A/C tech, I ran across cond units that had mist systems on them to help in this Tx heat.

Well, 2nd thoughts I finally have on the E-fan. I think I will be tossing the stock unit back in this W/E. I have had some better gas millage by about 1-1.5 per gallon. The problem seems to be the efficiency in cooling. The temp is running between 194-201 in 70 degree weather, I can only imagine what it will be when the brutal east coast humidity and 90 plus days start? I also am concerned about driving over the Rockies at high altitude which is only 15 days away.
In short I will be swapping this out to see what effect it has on the ability to cool the truck?

Prob a good idea since you have not really tested it out good yet.

Hmm I think you have your fan set to come on too late. I have mine set at 180° and I remember somewhere you posted you had it set at 190°+. I had a digital thermometer in my radiator and once it got to 180° it kicks on and a few seconds later its at 170° or below(this temp readout is after the fan kicks back off not during).
These past two weeks I've put more than 1k miles on my truck driving to Freer and Austin. I never had a problem and I've never seen the temp needle get past the halfway point. Also, my ultragauges alarm hasn't beeped at me for the engine temp setting I have it at. Its at 220° IIRC.

I have since set it to come on @ 185 and that is about when the Tstat opens. Oh and by the way dont trust the OE temp needle, this has been discussed Many times. My truck was running very cool before the bumper and the big ole` 240 Lightforce. I will be swapping out the fans this W/E this should take me about 15 minutes to complete. I will make a final judgement in a week or so. I should note one more thing the temp never got past 203 yet this was during a small grade so imagine if you will climbing to 11,000' above sea level, and taking a few hours to do so.

...annnnnnd round two!

Here with the Flexalite which I ripped out in Moab on the side of the road you can see the shroud comes nowhere close to containing the airflow through the whole radiator.
2011-02-06_16-44-59_312.jpg

The new SPAL set up will be modified into the OE shroud. This will also have a programable ECU for the fan which will be tied into the OE temp sensor, and not just a cheesy through core stat. By going this rout the fan comes on at 50% when the ECU reaches the low set target temp, and as the temp goes up the fan speed increases.
Anyway, after the install is complete and I have some miles on it I will share the results.

So when you pulled it along side the road, I take it you had your OEM fan along for the ride? I'm sure that was a fun thing to do.

Also, which Spal fan did you go with this time around.
