Failed Differentials

Figured this is something that most of us :o have seen if we have taken our trucks on anything tougher than a gravel ranch road! :(

After having my 3rd diff failure I was begining to believe I should buy a horse and ride off in the sunset. Well, this morning I looked at the elocker third I pulled off my 09 TRD Off Road.

Confidence restored. When I looked at the ring gear with the borescope I didn't see any damage on the ring gear - no missing teeth as I was accustomed to seeing. I did see axial play and the play in the pinion was very significant... I figured I blew the carrier!

What I found this morning is that all of the bolts holding the ring gear to the differential case were loose - out about a 1/4". :bentover:  :bentover: :bentover: That's one for the WTF thread!!! lol

You know, I was all set that I was going to have to switch out everything and engineer a solution - and I know these e-lockers are not the best but if I can get another year or two, I will be happy! (I figure my ability to make money will greatly improve come Nov 2012!!! :D :D Then I may do something different).

Oh yeah, the outer part of the ring gear did suffer a couple of broken teeth! :( But overall the wear pattern on the ring gear was fine - no signs of improper set-up.

As much as I hate to see Chase having to cover this, I think this failure started in a busy shop last August. :( It will be interesting to see his response. I know I am a ECGS supporter and hopefully this will be remedied with out much incident. Otherwise, I am going to set it up myself and get used to buying ring and pinions!!!! lol

pics and movie to come.

That's pretty jacked up. How do the carrier bolts come loose when they've got a ton of torque and tabs to lock them in?

No lock tabs on carrier bolts. I think someone grabbed the PB&J before they put locktite on the bolts or didn't grab the torque wrench! :(

Yea they didn't get torqued and/or loctited. Makes me want to go pull my third and check it out but me being the lazy man I am probably won't.

I know what you are saying!!!! Right now I'm trying to decide if I want to go out and play or stay home and wrench on:

  • Take out the housing and get a truss installed
  • Take off the front bumper and weld up the front so that I can use the winch with confidence
  • Remove the UCAs so that I can trade 'em and have a proper alignment (not look so drunk at high speeds!!!)

You may want to check the housing to make sure its not already bent before trussing it

One better. I was planning on putting in the trunk and taking it to Currie to see if they could check it and install the truss. :D

That way I'll know it's straight even after the heat has been put to it!

That would be the way to do it!
