Gearing questions?

Hi everyone new to this forum and just getting into the offroading life; just swapped my 1991 toyota for a 1982 that's had some shoty fab work done to it but some solid mods as well so i'm looking to get it ready for some serious trails, I'm from colorado and am really starting to enjoy the rock crawling have read enough to know that i wanted to have a solid front axle and that is what prompted the trade. Now i'm looking at gearing her down? any advice brands you would recommend i've already purchased and have a set of spartan lockers for the front and rear and am planning on doing new gears while i'm in there. Was debating between the 5.29 and the 5.71 that i found? is there such a thing as geared to low? and lastly at this point i wanted to verify that on a 1982 it is an 8" ring and pinion and are both std? or would one be reverse? any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Welcome to the forum man

First things first, your diffs should both use the same gear set (8"), unless the front is hi-pinion for some reason. Here's a helpful site for figuring out what you've got.

Also, there's no such thing as gearing "too low", unless you're going to be driving on the street a bunch. Doing 4000rpms at 60mph isn't cool. Another thing to consider is that the lower gears are weaker and are more likely to break. Most people go with 5.29. Really depends on the tire size you plan to run though.

As for what brand to buy? Just don't go cheap. Precision and Yukon are great, Nitro is good

It has 35" tires on it as it sits and was probably going to continue with that for now; and yea from what i've been reading it would seem a lot of people choose the 5.29 i just happened to see the others and was curious thanks for the insight. another random question the carburetor is new to me after running the 91 with the EFI system, i've read some threads saying the stock is fine and great as long as it's tuned right, lower the float slightly, and then make and over flow for it? others say go with a weber or some other aftermarket carb? any insight on that?

If it's running okay then leave it as is. The biggest problem with the stock carb is that it doesn't work very well on an incline. Also it, is pretty complex and can be a bitch to get dialed in. If it gives you trouble, I would suggest a webber carb, or maybe even converting to EFI.

Welcome to the forum. The weber is your best bet, the Toyota factory cab is hard to dial in and don't like being off camber to much.

took it out real quick the other day to see what it had for gears etc, stalled on me once as i was going up some technical stuff, but got her started back up and crawled the rest of the way up and over; was thinking i'd try the few mods on the stock attempt the tuning at least once and see what happens i figure i can handle dropping the 15-40 on a carb kit and if it works will save me in the long run if not well got a crash course in carbs right...

Actually ECGS told me that Nitro was better that Yukon and on par with Precision (who are out of business BTW) :(
"Ultra Axle, LLC ("Ultra Axle"), an affiliate company of Omix-Ada, Inc. ("Omix"), has just acquired assets of Alloy USA, Inc. and Precision Gear, Inc. in a liquidation process. A partial listing of assets includes inventory, 3 websites, phone numbers, trademarks, computer system and data."

Anyhow.. welcome!

Yeah, I know Precision went out of business, but they still have gears floating around. I think I got the last one ECGS had for the Tacoma clamshell in my front diff (now yours).

Maybe so.. I know when I had them do mine they had to use Nitro.. which is when they told me.

When I had been looking at gears, the only thing I read even remotely bad about nitrogen was that they were new. Haven't seen anyone having ridiculous problems with them. I bought a set of nitro 5.29s for the front and rear, though they have yet to be put in. I'll be running them with a spool in the back, Spartan in the front.

As far as the carb, I pulled the stock one when I was having issues with it, and went with a weber 32/36. Since you're in Co I would probably go a step up to the 38. Eventually I want to do the gotpropane dual gas/propane setup they have. Best part about switching to the weber is getting rid of all but 3 vacuum lines.

You can.

Well I know I can. But something about propane tanks plus enclosed spaces makes me think twice about it.

Pull the top off.. bikini top the bitch. Besides, do you really think any amount of 22 gauge sheet metal would help in the event of a catastrophic propane tank explosion? hard top.. bikini top.. strapped to your ass or in the bed... its game over.
