And a 308 is perfect for anything deer or larger. What's your point?

Honestly, to even say "perfect" is a bit of a stretch. Especially when you first mentioned "practical". If we're speaking of "perfectly practical" in the hunting context, nothing can beat a bolt action rifle. In a practical sense a bolt action, on average, is the more accurate than an AR, cheaper than an AR, easier to clean than an AR, and quieter (cocking and whatnot spooks game) than an AR.

I'm being devil's advocate here. I'm not saying don't get a military style rifle. They're fun and if you want one, get it. You'll love it. Just be careful in arguing that one is more practical than another.

Exactly, I want one because I WANT ONE and thats the only reason. I can KILL anything I hunt with my .204 or bow.
