My Cinco de Mayo Off Roading Trip

So, I knock off work yesterday early to go trail running with a friend.

We head up to a place called Bear Creek. Its very cool trail that has a snow fed stream about 15-20 feet wide and 2-5 feet deep. On our way in to the trail we see a full grown bear hanging out.

Normally we all bring a small backpack with 2 ltr of water, protein bars, small first aid kit, handheld FRS/GSMR (I use a dual band ham), wind breaker and light goretx pants. Today we only had single water bottles, the clothes on our backs and a bic lighter.

We usually do about a 10 mile run in and out.

We were making a good clip and we had heard that the entire run through the trail was about 3.5 hours (with lower water level but we failed to think about that). We figured that we were half way or so we decided to make a hard run for the remainder of the trail. Did I mention that the last part hasn't been open for about 10 years? Or that half of the trail is in water! Or that it was WAY over grown?

Well went it finally went pitch dark on us we decided to find a decent place to build a fire and settle in for the night.

It was a long and cold night - at least the half that was on the 'dark' side of the fire! The front was blazing! My friend couldn't sleep 'cause he thought that a bear would get us, after all, we were in bear creek and we've already seen a bear! :D

Long story short, the trail had 3,000 ft of elevation gain and was 17.9 miles which we did probably 15 of before we got stopped by the lack of light.

This morning we left at the crack of dawn and just got back.

Needless to say, it was an adventure!!!

Damn, looks like a good time. I tend to sweat a lot when I run so a single water bottle would not have been nearly enough for me lol

How right you are!!! We usually give each other shit for bringing stuff that we don't use. That won't happen ever again!!! lol

that thing is huge and seing it would have kept me awake all night too. How much crap did you catch from the woman for being out all night? Or had she already gone through the greiving proccess and found another man, lol

The absolute best part of this was that I was planning on the night at a condo at the beach... she had no idea!!! That was the true beauty of the trip, no one to worry!!! My friend was in town visiting his parents. He told them he was going camping (in Spanish). He meant to say hiking but it came out wrong. Another blessing!!! :D Otherwise it would have been a bitch worrying about them while we were fine!!! :D

About mid May is when Black bears start to mate..
I have hunted black bears, and there is no way I would want to be around them during this time or a sow with cubs....
I have seen the power these guys have and yes the big boys can climb trees, they just don't stay up long because of their weight.

It's good that you took a friend out on the trail, just make sure you can out run him...lol
