Rear Brakes - Locking Up and Backing Plate not Parallel to Drum

I am out of town at a friends house and we were going to go wheeling last night. Before we went, we had some time to kill so I wanted to check my rear brakes. From time-to-time one of my rear wheels would lock up on start up (maybe the parking brake wasn't fully releasing).

Before I removed the drum I noticed that the gap between the backing plate and the drum was 1/16" on the front side and 1/4" on the rear. Checked the other side and the same thing! Have you guys noticed this on any 2nd gen? It was probably that way when I changed the gears but I was so ready o get back to wheeling, I probably didn't want something to get in my way.

The drum is fully seated on the axle and the gap is constantly off the same during 360 degree rotation. Then I was thinking, just like I have heard some think that the surfaces of a tuned rotor should be off slightly to release gases (sounds like bullshit to me), maybe the difference in gap is to release stuff that may get stuck in between the drum and the backing plate (sounds like more bullshit).

Once again, has anyone noticed this on your truck?

Thanks!

Who cares about this whole thread!!! :)

Man DOWN!!!

So I checked the drum - No problem. Put truck back together and I am about to leave for the night and... After driving about 5 miles at midnight in BFE, . ...dat... dat... dump.. dump... dump... DUMP! - DUMP!!! - DUMP!!! Highway Patrol and local sheriff with lights on as I am pulling into a dimly lit Denny's parking lot. After looking at it for a 5 minutes. I'm back to my buddy's home to sleep for the night!

So its the next day and thinking it might be the brakes. Pull them off - man that silly f@cking paper gasket is reason alone to switch to some disc brakes!!!

Okay it wasn't the brakes! It was the BREAKS!!! - From peering though the diff housing, I could see 3 teeth missing from my Ring!!! F-me!

So now that I have one of these - "I'm gonna be down for a little while" slack times...

Did someone say something about a Ferd 9 inch? - To be continued on a new post.

And thank god for AAA Premium Membership!!! - The nicest part - is I get a ride home and don't have to call Zoom for a 3 plus hour ride!!!

Maybe a 8" TRD e-locker axle is in your future.
