What have you done to your ride lately?

Figured. Just found it odd that your phone would decide to bring up a massacre that caused me to spend a shit-ton of flying hours over Bosnia...

Lol goddam I'm gonna habeas to borrow a tq wrench, mine only goes to 150.

Breather was clogged fyi, dirt had caked in the valve. Replaced it, gonna Srebrenica if problem persists hoping that was it.

clogged breather actually could have been causing the weeping. I would just fix that and see if you leak.

On my phone and autocorrect is a fucker.

I would rather have my friends know I suck at spelling! lol

What I was trying to type was "gonna see if the problem persists, hoping that was it."

I think in attempting to double tap E, I got a B in there and my phone went to Bosnia. Apparently, my fingers are too fat for the phone keyboard.

But yes, gonna clean things up tomorrow and see if it returns. If yes, then I'll check out the pinion nut. If it's still a problem, a fluid change paying meticulous attention to fill level. If none of that get it, it's gotta be the seal.

I'm at 108,000 miles. It was def time to change it. That's pretty much the only thing I don't feel like messing with right now. It needed to get done and I don't have the time to do it. My truck shifts better now and had a little more pickup

Sounds like work. :)

But that does sound pretty easy. Car-X here in town offers a deal, get your transmission fluid changed and let them put their "additive" in it for $19 bucks and they will warranty the transmission until the next time you have it serviced, provided its less than 30k miles. (maybe its 60k miles??).. either way.. not a bad deal. Plus it was only like $129 for the service. Have I done it.. NO. Do I know people who have, yes... was it with a Tacoma.. no. But for a transmission warranty thats not a bad dealio.

With the Tacoma's, you only have to change out the fluid every 100k. So its not that bad versus my step dads diesel having to do it every 45k(I think?). My moms BMW never has to have the fluid changed. Must be nice! lol

And I also made sure that they have done Tacoma's before. And my buddy Eric, the mechanic at the shop, has before. He knew off the top of his head how many quarts it took and to replace the filter. So I didn't feel worried taking it to him.

I only have 62k miles.. but its 5+ years old, shits been abused.. towed in 100+ degree temps.. wheeled in super dusty conditions.

True. He said my fluid was black and def needed to be changed. I already knew that was gonna happen. lol

Depends how its used. Toyota's service recommendation is to inspect at 100k and every 25k thereafter and service as needed. Toyota CLAIMS world standard fluid never needs to be changed, only drain and fill if the fluid appears to have a problem.

I'm gonna go ahead and say it: This is bullshit, because oil is oil. It breaks down in the presence of heat/pressure. Eventually, the additive pack WILL go bad. It doesn't need changing nearly as often as engine oil because no combustion is going on in the tranny...but it still needs to be changed, ESPECIALLY if you put your truck through harsh use, which most of us do.

I just did my first drain and fill at 25k miles, and I'll be doing it annually or every 10k (whichever comes first) here on out. Wheeling is hard on auto trannies...the torque converter especially generates a LOT of heat when near full stall, which is where we spend most of our time when crawling...close to idle, which is when the most heat is generated.

As stated, my solution is to drain/fill every 10k miles to keep the lubricant fresh. Each drain/fill replaces ~3 qts of fluid in a ~12qt system, so doing that every year or every 10k should keep both viscosity and additive levels very happy, even under harsh use.

For people staying on pavement, I'd recommend every 50k for daily-driver use and every 30k if you regularly tow/haul loads.

On another note, swapped out my rear diff fluid today. It had been in for about 2k miles, about 1.5k of that with the new traction bar installed. I was surprised how much more metal was shaved. Definitely worth changing it out in a few thousand miles after install.

I don't know if the tranny fluid is synth but I was in the biz of trans coolers for a number of years. The difference of synth and dino is AMAZING. I have seen coolers with 300k that look brand new!

Also those shavings? They are part of the lapping compound! lol :) ;)

Analyses over at BITOG suggest it is a very low viscosity synth.

As for the gears continuing to cut metal, it's also only about 2500mi on this gearset, so they may still be breakin' in. Either way, ECGS has me covered on that one.

Toyota boasts that the new prius is a maintenance free vehicle and I believe it. Oil changes on par with the TDI Jetta's at 10,000 miles and it will only get better in the future.
