Yotarob's 86 4runner build

Damn this intermittent starting problem is driving me crazy. Yesterday morning I went out side to straiten up the garage before Sam & Todd showed up to weld Sam's sliders. Needed to move the 4runner, turn the key & it started right up. Moved it roughly 50 feet & turned it off. 8 hours later we where done with the sliders & I was going to weld my diff guard on, turned the key & nothing but a click. Walk away for 30 minutes & go back to try & find the problem, turn the key & starts right up. Finish welding the guard on & ready to move it back to it's parking spot & nothing but a click. Couldn't get it started so I said fuck it & went to bed. Today after work & was going to try & track down the problem, hit the key & it started right up. WTF is going on here? Getting a little pissed, but a wise little birdie told me to replace the starter contacts so I ordered some today & they should be here Wednesday. Fingers crossed.

Look into the Hot Shot starter mod.

Score.

Man I love the way that parts get passed around over here. I posted all the parts I was selling on TTORA and TW and ALL of them have gone to TOR members.
Has they should

I have read up on it a little, if replacing the starter contacts tonight doesn't cure the problem then I will be serious about doing it tomorrow. Also bought a starter button to by pass the ignition switch, but I am not going to install it unless I have to.

have you tried the ol' "smack it with a small hammer or screwdriver" trick? Mine wants me to hit it every so often... I know I should just replace the solenoid or contacts.. but I like to hit it. :D

I have tried that when it left me on the trail, but tapping (or beating for that matter) on it seems to have no effect.

Don't replace it....rebuild it. Your nippendenso starter is far superior than the junk reman's you get from the auto parts store. You probablly just need new contacts. I bought a complete rebuild kit from Napa for $26. I'll post some pics of the tear down & rebuild.

Napa chick just droped my starter parts off & this is not what I was expecting. The kit came with brushes but no contacts. I guess I am going to have to tear it down & see what the deal is but if it needs contacts then I might be fucked as far as having it fixed by Saturday. If that is the case.....I will buy a new starter :(

Damn it! I didn't think about that, I'll let you know how it works out tomorrow.

I'm bringing a trailer home tomorrow so Incan haul the truck up to the shop Friday and degrease the motor, I'll leave it up there and if we have to will pull starter on Saterday and you can help me bleed the brakes at the sametime

Well, I pulled the starter last night and took it apart. My contacts didn't look too bad, they had maybe 5 thousanths worth of wear on them. The brushes didn't look bad either, but they where a little corroded so I went ahead and replaced them anyways. I put it all back together & re-installed it into the truck & had no change. CLICK. Fuck! I took a bunch of pics while disecting the starter & was planning on doing a full write up since we have so many older Yota's on here, but I guess it would be pointless to show what a good starter looks like . I took it back out & plan to have it tested like I should have in the first place. Maybe Randy is right and the solenoid is the problem? Hope that is the problem anyways because if it isn't then I have no idea what it could be.

That sucks man. I know when I have to tap on mine, its the solenoid I tap on. Have you priced a solenoid?

Yeah, they cost more than a whole damn starter.

damn, I didn't see them as a separate unit.. but that sucks about the price. I was looking at autopartswarehouse.com and they had a pretty good selection.

I was just looking at Napa online. I am going to need one by tomorrow so ording off the net is out of the question.

Tap the Starter before you turn the crank.. damn, starting to sound like a Ford.. :D

Already tried that & it didn't help....pay attention Sam!
