Adding that relay to the starter made a HUGE difference. Hell yeah, I fixed that damn intermittent starting problem.

Sweet man, now you won't have to get towed off the trails again.

Yeah, and the key works like normal, no more touching wires together.

Everyone with an older Yota should do this mod, cost me $12, took me about 30 minutes to do & made a huge difference. The starter spins much faster now. The original design of the system is the cause, no starter relay means that the ignition switch carries the full load of voltage & over time builds resistance. I knew this was my problem because I had 12.4 volts at the battery, but only 11.2 at the starter signal wire when cranking. According to Marlin Crawler, anything over .5 volts drop is unacceptable.

I used a 40 amp 4 pin relay & 10 gauge wire with weatherproof female spade connectors for the mod. Wiring for the relay is terminal 30 to battery for full time hot, I chose to use an eye-let connector & bolt mine to the battery cable terminal on the starter. Terminal #85 on the relay goes to ground. #86 your original starter signal wire & #87 on the relay goes to the starter where the original signal wire was.

Relay ready to go

I mounted my relay on the passenger side fender well & grounded it throough the mounting hole.

I also got the rear billies installed last week.

Since I plan on night wheeling this weekend, I wired in some cheapo rock lights for the front & replaced both of my factory headlights with some new Wagners. New head lights are probably 3 times brighter than the old ones.

Rock lights.

Thanks for the right-up Robbie! Time for me to do this as well.

And about the rear of the Creampuff.. totally sucks man! Nothing 4 or 5 gallons of Bondo can't fix though.

Thanks for the encouragement, but I'll be honest with you guys. I knew when I started this project that I was running the risk of damage, but now that it happened I am more pissed about it than I thought I would be. I'm trying to be a good sport about it. Fixing to go get the tail gate off & beat out what I can.

I totally know where you are coming from. You build knowing that it will get torn up... but you still don't like for it to happen. I almost flopped mine a while back and although I knew it was going to happen someday, I just didn't expect it to be so soon.

Yeah well I am just going to have to make the best of it for now & keep moving forward. I have lots more planned for this truck, starting with installing the heim's & upgrading the brakes.

On another note, the tires helped out a lot, I was able to go mostly everywhere anybody else could. I wheeled it for several more hours after the tree incident, of course I was a little leery knowing that the brakes could not hold me on an incline. But honestly I thing it wheeled great.

dam im missing wayyyy to much shit on this thing

Yes, yes you have

Dude, it's one thing to push it too hard and break something mechanical or ding a body panel, but to roll backwards into a damn tree and because the damn brakes couldn't hold the vehicle, that sucks ass. I'd be super pissed.

That is exactly how I fell about it, I have put a lot of work into the brakes, but to cause so much damage over such A stupid & basic thing. I only have myself to blame. Brake upgrade here I come.

It is a great cheap mod that anyone can do. Comes highly recommended by me.....& more importantly by Sir Marlin.

Let me know about that bedside, I'm not trying to be cheap about it, with in reason I'll give whatever he wants for it. Need a tail light also. Thanks man.

Damn it I could kick myself in the ass.
