Sorry for shitting up your build thread. Carry on. :)

Haha it's all good, you guys will be the first to know when I find such a place. I tied myself up a bit at my house with the garage and all but if the right opportunity arose I'd be out of here in a heartbeat.

Not much of a building going here anyway, I've been slacking. I got the manifolds back from powdercoating a couple of days ago and my new PS pump and lines came in yesterday, so I'm going to work on swapping pulleys onto the new pump, then hopefully yanking this damn engine out of there so I can begin re-assembly :)

Drained the power steering fluid today, removed the old pump and pulley then transferred it to the new pump. On the powerstroke design, the bolts for the pump housing are behind the pulley so you have to remove pulley to take off the pump from the PS/alternator bracket. Hopefully this pump lasts a while, its a refurbed OEM one that I bought online from a dealership. Thought about converting to a saginaw pump but due to costs I just replaced in kind.

After that I took the time to clean up the shifter tower. Removed all the old RTV, cleaned off the grease/grime, then installed a new inner boot since the old one was dry rotted. Boy what a pain in the ass that was. It's held in with a giant snap ring that is damn near impossible to get back on after it flies out. Spent longer dicking with the shifter boot than the power steering pump.

This week I'm hoping to finally pull the engine so I can replace the exhaust manifolds and re-seal the pan, then begin the re-assembly.

At this rate your tow pig is going to be a real work mule pretty soon. I like your style on fixing it all the first time though.

lol well my theory was most of this shit I have to disassemble anyway to get the engine out so I figure while I'm in there might as well replace it especially with 250k miles on the clock. It would suck to put everything back together only to have to redo shit. Once I put this engine back in, I don't want to be fucking with it for a long while.

You have been dropping some coin on this, parts & labor(your time) etc, I imagine it's still way cheaper than a new $70k truck.

That's Mr Asshole to you
I was actually thinking would a newer truck been in reach with the time and money spent fixing this one?

Yeah but I don't really count my time haha. I got a pretty good deal on it when I picked it up. I have a spreadsheet I've been keeping track of the costs, when all is said and done I'll be into it for around 25k. For how much I'll be using it, I can't justify spending 70-80k on a new diesel then having to deal with all the emissions BS. There's no payment on this truck and it'll take me where I need to go (eventually :) )

Another thing which is just personal preference is that I like the body styling of this year, the idea of simplicity and lack of fancy sensors and gadgets this one has, plus the newer diesels are all automatics with exception of the dodges but I'm not a dodge fan.

And last but not least, I like tearing things apart and learning how they work and how to fix them it's just been a hobby of mine my dad passed down to me over the years. It works two fold in that it keeps me busy plus if I ever break down I'll know the tools needed and how to fix it lol

Even cheaper than I thought, that's awesome!!

Yeah it seems like alot but in reality the only expensive things so far have been the turbo and clutch. Everything else is nickel and dime type stuff but does add up after a while. I got a little more progress done tonight, but it just rained the last two days so the mosquitos were out and man they were eating me alive so I called it early tonight.

Pulled the clutch release fork, replaced the pivot stud which surprisingly is just a piece of plastic. Everywhere I read said it was cheap insurance to replace while the trans is dropped. If that thing breaks you are SOL

Found a little wear mark that looks like the fork was rubbing on the housing, didn't seen too bad but was a small concern. think I'll just leave it be since I'm replacing everything, whatever was causing it should be eliminated

Old and new release bearing, the old one was still in decent shape

While I had the power steering drained I'm going to add this filter in line with the return to the reservoir, should help to extend the life of the pump and steering box

I pulled the front rad support, AC compressor and condenser, and disconnected the fuel lines. Only thing left to remove the motor is to hook up the hoist and remove the engine mounts, going to wait til I have a friend come over before I try to do that solo and fuck it up lol

Well the mighty 7.3 is out! Wasn't too bad with two people we had it out in about two hours ended up had having remove the front bumper and tow hooks to scoot the hoist in far enough.

Hope you bought a shit load of degreaser. Interested to see what it looks like when you drop it back in.

I have a bunch haha. Good thing is it's getting a new oil pan since this one is rusty. Was going to coat with POR15 but after seeing its condition I went with a moroso pan. It looks like the drivers side valve cover gasket was leaking pretty bad as well. I have new harnesses and gaskets to replace them with and I'll do the glow plugs and 50 cent mod while im in there.

I figured might as well do all the work with the engine out that makes it easier lol

List of things to do while the engine is out:
  • Replace rear oil galley plug/orings
  • Replace both valve cover harnesses
  • Replace both UCVH with new
  • Replace all glow plugs
  • Replace fuel suppy/return hard lines up to the fuel bowl
  • Replace both exhaust manifolds
  • Replace oil pan, reseal gasket.
  • Replace oil pickup tube gasket
  • Degrease the engine/engine bay area and touch up any spots of the frame with POR15

I'm hoping to get that stuff done this week, then drop the engine back in next weekend and begin re-assembly of everything :)

You are knocking all this out on dirt under an ezup and I was too lazy to swap a CV axle on concrete in my garage this weekend. Maybe next weekend.

I think you're thinking of the wrong engine project. Hes far from dirt under and EzUp.

That's me and my Tacoma. I can see how you could easily confuse two DBz from NJ though lol
