Recap thread for a good trip to Big Bend Ranch State Park. This was originally planned as a two-rig trip but someone got screwed by work (condolences @Silverback ) . We went Mon thru Fri to give us time to get home and cleanup before getting back into the work week (and I have a trip to prep for).

Monday - left the house at 6a and headed out on I-20 towards Pecos; then south thru Fort Davis to Presidio. The 4Runner did pretty good on MPG overall so I was happy with the initial start on the trip. The Ranger Station at Sauceda was open a few times while we were there; but we still had to check in at Ft Leaton station by Presidio. It did make the trip a bit easier since we did not have to rush into the center of the park.

We camped at the Los Ojitos by the center of the park the entire trip. It is easier to get around the park from here and still away from people. Great location if you want to explore the park by vehicle. On Monday we just drove Llano Loop and then set went to the campsite to start relaxing.

Tuesday - The weather changed to about 20 degrees cooler than forecasted on Sunday when we were packing up; so we had to make a few adjustments. We decided to run a trail out to the county road 4 and then into town for tarps & gloves. We took the main road west to the Botella Trail towards the northwest corner & county road 4. At the split we went lef to the take the west trail. Overall it was a great trail that you could tell did not get a lot of traffic. The town of Presidio has grown enough to have a Dollar General, Auto Zone, new large gas station at the edge of town, and bigger Publix grocery store. So it was easy to run into town to get tarps and gloves. Back to the park we went to the east trail of the Botella Trail.

The east trail started out pretty chilled but had a few spots that the loose rock let the 4Runner slide around a bit more than expected. I did manage to get a flat tire from a puncture. The Milwaukee M18 1/2" impact made the tire swap pretty quick. The rest of the trail had a few touchy spots and one bowl area that I managed to get a slider stuck on. I had to take a different line to get through it. The two Botella trails are great and worth the time to run them. I do have to warn you that there is 4G reception on the higher elevations of these trails. Back at the camp the tarps were put up and gave us enough wind break to make cooking and eating a meal decent again.

<pic dump> I need to do some adjustments on a lot of the pics. The sun was out in full force.

out to the Solatario planning to drive the Road to Nowhere and go up to the Uranium Mine. Sadly the park had the trail closed after Tres Papalotes. We did spend some time at that camp site looking around as this was the first time we found it without someone camping there. The park has added bear boxes for food at most of the camp sites in the northeast area. So with our plans cancelled we headed to check a few new campsites and then the Fresno Canyon trail.

This is where we met a guy in a 3rd gen Tacoma. Cool guy with a bed cap and setup for camping out of it. Sadly we broke his streak of seven days of not seeing other people. He had a great camp site to explore from with some great views. After meeting him we headed to have lunch at Pila Montoya 3. The site has an amazing view at the top of the Fresno Canyon and solar bathroom close. Defintently on the list to stay at later.

The Fresno Canyon trail is great. No other way to describe it. The upper canyon is steep with lots of great views while the lower canyon is mostly river bottom driving with some hard ground here and there. This was our first time to drive this trail and I do not know why I waited so long. It is a dead end trail that takes ~45 minutes one way so be ready to spend some time on this one.

Thursday - We headed back to the Madrid area of the park to check out a few areas we have not explored yet. There is a section of the Madrid Falls Raod where the elevation starts going up after the Javelin Pens turn off that is sketchy - like wtf sketchy. I went up that area in 4x4 high but went down it in 4x4 low. The ride down it I was steering but the 4Runner was just sliding down where the rocks wanted to go. It was sketchy but fun once I knew we were not going to roll. So yeah. lol

The Chorro Vista campsite at the end of the trail is awesome. Great views for sunrises and sunsets with lots of foot trails if you want to do that. We then drove over to the Mexicano Falls Trailhead to check out the overlook for the Crawford-Smith House at the end of the Fresno trail. It is a short trail that is easily done and well worth the walk. The ride out was pretty chill excluding the sliding/ wondering-if-we-were-going-to-roll part. We stopped at a pass / rest area on the trail and it was pointed out to us by another couple there the spot has 4G. Since we already agreed to have lunch there I sent some texts out to tease some of you poor guys that were stuck at home. The rest of the day was pretty laid back as we were relaxing before heading home.

Friday - pretty standard last day; we had a quick breakfast and headed into the wind. The wind managed to be either a strong headwind or crosswind the entire drive home.

Trip mileage was 1260 with ~240 miles of that ok dirt.

Lessons learned - always pack a couple tarps, spare tires are a good thing, and I need to go back to BBRSP more.

Test confirmed the original images are too large for embedding. Will process them when I get back from Discount Tire getting the flat tire fixed.
