Alright got the engine thing figured out. I'm going to buy the spare 22RE Rob has. We're going to try and get it running before we pull it out. That way I'll only need to do a quick tune up once I get it in my Runner if that.

So your going to put Rob's spare 22re in MO4R; then rebuild the original motor and put it back in? Sounds like a good plan. Maybe when your done banging around the temp motor I'll be ready to start building one up for my 4R.

Thats a poo plan, see whats wrong with yours first, could be something simple and save you pulling an engine. I would still pick up robs spare engine but use that as the rebuild if yours isn't toast.

Already tried that line of thought... not going for it.

Mine has 300k on it I'm just going to assume the worst. Either way it's a gamble. But that's the name of the game when it comes to used engines.

But it's a smart gamble, putting robs spare engine in guarantees pulling your engine twice once to put in robs spare and again to put in your old rebuilt motor. Fixing yours (assuming it's easily fixable) leads you to only pulling the engine once to put in robs rebuild spare. You're talking about adding a metric shit ton of likely unnecessary work to this build.

But a lot of experience turning wrenches. So it is a 50/50 sort of thing.

But my rebuild is not a totally guaranteed thing at the moment. It's just a thought. There's a lot I want to do to this thing before I worry about rebuilding that engine.

Ok, newb question time. I believe the engine I'm getting from Rob is coming form an automatic. What is needed to drop it in my Runner with the 5 speed?

The bell housing and flexplate off your engine.

The bell housing and flexplate off your engine.

If he is swapping the motors out why does the bell housing from the transmission have to be messed with? Shouldn't it be only removing the torque convertor and bolting on his flexplate and clutch pack?

...Or are you thinking the bell housing will be different because of the torque convertor vs clutch pack?

This ^

They have the same bolt pattern, but that is referring to the bell housing to the engine, not the engine to the tranny

Besides, it's super easy to just unbolt the bell housing from the motor and pull it out of the engine bay. Then drop the new engine in and bolt to the old bell housing. With an Auto it's a little different because you have to unbolt the flex plate before you can separate the engine from the bell housing.
