Pretty cool to at least get them out for their first trip. A few more trips this summer and they may start getting comfortable enough to hike at night.

They have been "camping" many times, but all at private places where neighbors are stacked up on every side with fancy showers and flushing toilets and dad cooks while mom cleans. Everything is handed to them on a literal plate. I call that city camping. If I wanted to do that I'd just stay at home in my backyard.

Uncle Boyd don't play that. Gave them all their food and dishware on day one and made them responsible for it throughout the trip including putting it up in the trees for storage. I took them to a state preserve where we had no neighbors and our camp site was 100 x 100 yards. Water is from a hand pump and bathrooms are shit pits. Started showing them how to track animals so I made sure our hiking trips were off "hiking" trails where the animals avoid. We followed game trails exclusively. Maybe not a great idea seeing all the tracks prior to them going to sleep lol

That is literal camping and good for them. There are too many people that think an RV or cabin is "roughing it". That said - I do appreciate a good burrito in the mornings when camping.

Unloading a truck and carry camping equipment 200ft to camp site is not exactly camping either, which most folks do and I call that car camping.

I like to do 2-3 day back country, primitive, BFE, backpacking trips, I also do a lot of car camping as describe above.
I also have a RV, its nice to have a really nice base camp for 2 week trips.:o

I had to look it up to see what REI dividends were about. That is pretty cool if they actually add up to a decent amount.

There are all types of "camping" but I generally have no problem shying away from backpacking. I did my time living out of a bag and carrying heavy loads up and down various dirt paths. Now I try to take it a little easier on my body since it looks like I am going to be around a while longer to abuse it. But to each his own.

Pretty cool until you realize that your money goes to a company that supports the closure of public lands to OHVs. I will never give REI a dime

Well that is a deal breaker. I'll stick to Amazon. I'm shopping for foam floor mats that snap together for the tent floor right now. I do not want the new cot to tear up the floor in the tent if it get vigorous movement.

Yep. Exactly this. Don't they want to close all mountain bike trails as well?

I'm getting to the point that spending money only on hooked and blow may make sense. They will never send their money to Sierra Club.

We car camped but I packed my gear just like it was a hiking trip in order to show them how much crap they don't need. The best was when both of them made tinder bundles then tried to light the fire with magnesium rods and strikers.... neither could get it to light for an hr. Pulled my lighter out of my pocket and their bundles burst into flames. Guess they didn't have the force needed to get a good chunk to fly off and light.

REI donated over 18k to a preserve I volunteer time at.

The hypocrisy is amazing within the tree hugers. Same guy heading the board for the preserve is the same guy trying to get Wharton's trails closed with another tree huger board. On the other hand last month they tried to get permits to blaze new trails in the preserve. I was cracking up when they were denied. They only care about their views and only see from that perspective. I bet they don;t even see the hypocrisy.

I don't doubt it.

Just like all of today's politics.

Considering what the asshats are doing with our money, I consider less tax 'revenue' a blessing! :)

I am on a detailed search for very large parcels of land and you would be surprised how much is owned by tree huggers - land is power.

My first 'Jersey camping was when I was probably 4 or 5 at Camp Gaw. I just looked it up and it looks like it had maybe 20 camp spots. I am truly in love with remote camping. I don't like rangers and typically don't care for someone pitching their tent 5 feet from mine. I do have charity in my heart though. I make an exception for good looking Co-Eds. :) lol

Used to need to own a parcel to vote. Might not have been that bad of an idea lol

The button is coming.

Roger - seems like that co-ed could pitch tents everywhere.

Oh no... it's going to be a reality

I'd go camping every day if that was in my tent
