Carrier Bearing

I have some questions about carrier bearings. My drive shaft moves around in it. Does this mean that I should replace it, or it needs to be replaced? Also; how do I replace this? Does the drive shaft slip out, or is it attached to the drive shaft?

Thanks guys

If its truly bad, pull the whole thing and take it a local driveline shop. They will be able to replace the parts that have failed. Your carrier bearing is usually connected to the frame with just 2 bolts.

Correct, it is attached with 2 bolts. Do you know how to tell if it is bad? I had my fab guy tell me its bad, but I don't know. I don't have much time to fix if I need to. If I can just throw one in the truck and fix it on the trail, then I can do that.

Not an expert here, but I would say that after looking at the pic of the replacement part, that the drive shaft would need to be pressed into the id of the bearing....not something you could do on the trail. Any drive ability issues or noises?

No, I haven't noticed anything going on, or any noises coming from underneath, I know if it's real bad, that I will know it for sure. Shakes, and rattles.

Did you grab the driveshaft and try to move it? Depends on how bad it is, but if its real bad you would be able to move it. All total there are 10 bolts holding the thing in your truck, if you are really concerned then pull it and take it somewhere.

Yes, I can move it around. Has about 1/2"-3/4" play in it.

its fucked, take it out and see if you can remove the old one with tools you have... if not, take it somewhere.

I don't really know anything about carrier bearings, because I don't have one. I do however have a couple extra ones in my garage. There for a 2nd gen, but if your truck uses the same one your welcome to it.

Why in the world do you have those carrier bearings?

Can I remove it, and if so, how. What are the pros and cons?

I'll start looking for some shops that can repair tomorrow, hopefully.

Can you isolate the slop to the bearing itself. Is it rubber mounted? I would find out exactly where the slop is.

Remove the DS or carrier bearing? If I was you and had to have the carrier bearing replaced I'd look into rebuilding the DS without a carrier bearing. A one piece, might be too long of a length, but with a double carden unit it might be possible. Might not be the cheapest way to go however.

Yes, slop seems to be in the bearing. Seems fine around ujoints. I'm not sure what the rubber mount means. The bearing, looking at it, is rubber. Looks like the drive shaft is just sitting in a rubber boot looking thing.

Look at the napa link I posted before, the bearing is the metal in the center, the rubber isolates vibrations between the DS/bearing & the body/carrier bearing mount..

Save yourself some hassle.. just pull it and take it somewhere. If you don't know of a reputable DS place, contact a local 4WD shop and ask them who they use. Of hell, Toyota of Dallas, those guys seem to know WTF is going on with aftermarket goodies, I would imagine they know a good driveline shop.

Prolly a good idea. As you may have figured out, I have no idea what I am talking about. My parents did not bless me with many mechanical abilities.

Hopefully I can get something figured out tomorrow. I am on the road 13 hours with it on Friday.

Well if you lived down here I'd say take it to Inland Truck Parts.. you can usually drop stuff off early in the morning and pick it up later in the day. I've had two driveshafts rebuilt there.

Ya know, by just looking at the factory service manual, it does not appear that the carrier bearing is pressed on. This would make removal and replacement very easy. Hard part would be to get the flange off of the drive shaft.
Here is a link to the manual it's under propeller shaft
