Ive lost 2 antennas in the woods due to low branches. Even cracked one - two feet off the top of a 109" stainless steel whip and my highest mounting location was my bed with a 3' firestick. I know this is not CB but it all applies.
I know the trails you guys 'normally' drive down aren't that shallow, but ain't nothing going on my roof that can cause leaks or open holes if it gets hit hard. Ive got multiple dents in my roof and a pillar from branches. Just stating this because if you are setting up communications they should be durable for shit hitting the fan as well. Maybe you won't be doing 5mph down a wide ass trail. Maybe someone had a med emergency and your doing 50 down a shallow trail with branches flying and need comms..... Magnetic roof mounts are pretty solid but won't break typically if you knock them off. Got one now and the magnet is strong. It still gets moved around when it takes a hit but not broken yet.

That is one of the reasons I went with mounting it to my roof rack at the very back of the rack. Plus the antenna has a spring base. If the awning is mounted on the rack then it will keep limbs from hitting anywhere near the base of the antenna as well.

Thank goodness the US Gubment doesn't "run" the Sarsat Cospass (PLB) satellites otherwise Id bet they would pass down fake costs to the customers like they just hit you HAM guys with
I'm happy with my GMRS. I carry a HAM capable radio on "those trips" just in case everything goes to crap. Beyond that I do not care to talk to someone 400 miles away.

My neighbor has a shed that looks like the fucking NASA command center inside and he has 6 or so different antennas sticking up all over his yard. Some of them are 40' tall.

Yeah that sounds like him. He has regular group conversations and a few are a pretty good ways off. I believe he said one of the guys was several states away (he's in NW Oklahoma.

In his case, its due to lack of room. His house is less than 800 sqft, one bedroom. The shed is almost as big as the house

Ill never forget listening to the first invasion of Iraq back in 91* but I think my dad had it set up on shortwave. We had antennas all over (Dad was a Bell Telephone lineman w/access to equipment). Can't be too sure if it was SW of ham or the difference between the two - I was a pre teen w/other concerns.

A shortwave radio usually picks up radio transmissions in AM. Hams transmit voice usually in the SSB which is AM minus half the signal and the carrier wave. Because these are removed by a Ham radio transmitter, you can't receive the transmissions on a radio that wants full AM (both sidebands and the carrier)

With the potential for a long trip this summer and more than likely being in remote areas with little to no coverage I have been looking at these little Garmin units. More so as an SOS and to allow family o keep track of progress.
