So are any of them worth a shit? The price is nice but reading about the features is like reading german IMO. I like the last one also.

Any of them would make your CB seem sound like 2 cans and string! Your choice would be perfect - Waterproof would be nice.
01 other thing, these are all built to Mil specs - Not a POS in the group!
Thanks for the info. I would pull the trigger right now if I thought I could use it in the foreseeable future. I need a few more folks to get on board with this. I'll keep thinking about it. If I had a meter like that I would still need to take a test and get a liscense right?
Yaesu FT-270R MARS Extended TX Mod
Please note that it is not illegal to modify a radio to transmit on other frequencies. However it is illegal to transmit on a frequency that you are not licensed for or that your radio is no Type Accepted for by the FCC.
This is a very simple mod that anyone with decent soldering skills should be able to perform. It only requires the removal of a resistor and a factory reset of the radio afterward.
Start by removing the battery from the back of the radio
Remove the adhesive cover that sits to the left. Don't worry it will stick right back on when you are done.
Locate the resistor show in the images below.
Use some solder removal braid to remove the solder from both sides.
Apply the soldering iron to the side of the resistor with slight pressure until it slides off. Be careful not to lose the resistor.
Reassemble the radio
Hold the PTT and lamp buttons at the same time and power the radio on while doing so. The LCD will display SETRST.
Rotate the dial knob to ALLRST and press F on the keypad. Please note that this will erase all the memory settings you have save in the radio.
Your radio is now modified, please be careful when entering frequencies into the radio that you normally just scan as the radio is now capable of transmitting on them. I recommend programming an offset frequency that is back in the Ham Band to avoid accidents.

The study guide (all the answers to all the questions) I got from the InterWebs for free. The question pool is here http://www.ncvec.org/page.php?id=356 but if you search, you could probalby find the current examiner's book that has all the answers and the reason why. if you pm me I will get you the last one and I bet if you studied that you would pass even with the changes. Sean has a copy of it too. The exam was $14 (35 questions and I think you need to answer 25 right- 70%). IIRC, the license was free for 10 years. In The Great State of Texas you can get your call sign license plates for a buck or two! I hope this helps and inspires you to get your license! (Message modified slightly)
I am about convinced that this is the one I would want.

However I don't see and 12v chargers or cool mounts
Edit:
I did find this

If only my 4runner had cup holders.
As I look at all of those again, the idea of 'water-proof" handheld is nice. Also I was listening to some of these HAM geeks on http://www.oausa.net/content/best-mobile-ham-radios and a lot of these guys use hand-helds with a roof-top mag mount with great success for added distance!
Good luck guys and I PROMISE YOU, you will never look back!

Here is how I studied:
I went to the website that has all ~360 questions from the pool. Read each question. The answer, a, b, or, c, is displayed next to the question. Don't even bother reading the other answers. Just the correct answer. So read the question, then the answer. It took me about an hour and a half to get thorugh all of them. Then take about 5-10 practice tests. If you are still missing more than 9, which is the most your allowed to miss, go through and read the question and answers one more time.
Here is the link to the question pool:
http://www.ncvec.org/
In the left column click element 2 technician, then scroll down.
For the practice tests:
http://aa9pw.com/
On the left click take exam.
Paul sent me this helpful link to help search for a test near your. They have them all the time. Mine only cost $4. I can't find the link so maybe Paul can post it up.
