Well, on the early generation trucks/ 4runners the CVs are pretty weak. I think I would choose to use a selectable locker so I could use it sparingly, or an LSD to give it a little slippage to keep it from breaking, but still get traction.

A Detroit or similar ratcheting locker would be the worst choice, because it will load the diff, then slam the CVs when it unloads. Auto locker isn't the wort choice, but on a vehicle that doesn't have ADD or manual hubs, I wouldn't really suggest it.

Lunchbox is designed to release in turns so it will not break CV's. BUT CV's are not the strongest items in the chain so if you want to prevent them from breaking then A: upgrade CV's or B: solid axle swap.

You will break CV's.. period.

And you can change one a HELLUVA lot faster and easier than changing a Birf. LOL

Are you talking about the 4runner or the tacoma? The tacoma only has one option so I'm going to assume you're talking about the 4runner. Selectable is the way to go with an IFS locked front, however the only option currently available is the ARB which costs a serious chunk of change and in my opinion it is not worth it's high cost. Get a a lunch box locker and be carefull about using the throttle with the wheels turned. Next get good at changing CVs they aren't all that strong out of the box so locked or not you are still fairly likely to destroy one at some point, now if you want to upgrade RCV does make some super CVs however they are also a serious chuck of change but are likely to never break.

You've just got to look at what is most likely to break the CV, with an open diff you will end up with one spinning tire which will at some point during it's spinning suddenly find traction introducing a massive shock load onto the CV in a rather unpredictable manner this is how every CV i've ever seen break has been broken. With the front end locked you have more of an ability to control this shock loading by having the tire not spin but rather move in a constant manner while this causes more stress while turning it is a lower static load vs the massive shock load that would have previously been experienced leading you to actually be less likely to break a CV on the harder obsticles where the front locker would typically be used.

On older Yotas those front diffs are very weak.. locked or not, controlled chaos or throttle to the floor... he's gonna break CV's. Just carry spares and learn to change them quickly. :)

good topic, I have been wondering the same thing. I want to get better traction up front in my Tacoma.

Lunchbox locker is a great option.. just be prepared to replace CV's. <note> lifetime replacement's are available at Vatozone... buy one and take it back when it shits the bed.

Oh my bad.. $10 core charge. $70 with a lifetime warranty. Just make sure your receipt isn't in the glovebox as they turn to shit in about 3 hours of 100 degree heat. LOL

Well this convinced me. Gonna pick two up and put them on. Carry the ones that I have on now as spares incase they break on the trail... That is, if I ever get back on the trail.

its easy to replace... once you've done it a couple times you can do it very quickly. I'd actually just buy a couple and use them as spares... chances are that VatoZone won't know the difference if you bring them a broken CV even if it was 8 years old.

I wouldn't do that the factory units are much stronger than the generic replacements avilable buy one or two of the cheepos and carry them as the spares.
