I get you 100% on the moral argument of it. But looking back if my last job would have done that a 4th time after me turning it in 3 times prior I would have cashed it and smiled. They got enough of my time that the extra compensation would have been appreciated.

This is all the new girl. The girl before her was pretty good - she only had the payroll company paying taxes to the wrong state for me for a year and three other NJ guys for 3-4 years prior to my arrival. No idea how my coworkers never noticed for three years??? I do my own taxes so I caught it on tax day.

This company is screwed. I'm just waiting for the right opportunity to open.

and sometimes I consider opening my own company up. Ive got more than a few clients that will go where I go.

This customer today made me really think about it.

There is a lot to be said for working for yourself - good and bad. But in the end the question is if you think you could grow it into a business that did not have to have you there to do the work. Otherwise you are still working for the company instead of the company working for you. That scenario is one of the bigger things that stopped me from opening my own IT shop when I left my last place.

Yea, that would never happen until I got it large enough to cover PM's and estimators with salaries above 150k. Even then I would need to trust them and I'm a negative cynic so that would be a hurdle. + Only way to get great people in my trade is to pay out the nose, treat them better, and offer great incentives so I could steal them away from other companies. Training up green people can take up to 5 years until they can learn to run on their own. Could train up a smart person in 1-2 years so they could walk on their own, but running and making split decisions that could impact margins - takes time. Stuff that would hang me up for days 20 years ago I laugh at now, but that's only due to me making mistakes and learning from them over time. Wisdom is earned the hard way IMHO
