I would think .45 should be plenty for a bear.

Maybe...... a black bear.

For a grizzly or polar bear I'd want some more pep in my step than a .45 offers. Shit - I'd want more than a 10mm offers if I had either charging me

Pretty good read!

"The pistol calibers, when known, range from .22 rimfire to .460 Smith & Wesson Magnum. The most common are .44 magnums with 23 cases, all successful."

Second most popular was .22 and that blew my mind. Only 2 used 10mm. I suspect the numbers are slanted due to popularity and I also suspect the people shooting .22 did not bring those guns outdoors for self defense, but who knows.

Yep, I'll be taking my .223 or 300BO "pistol" with me in that case.

I can legally haz a can of bear spray which ironically can't be shipped to NJ. Blue man group (liberal reps) say you don't need defensive protection when out and about in the most densely packed black bear territory in the country lol

The tree huggers flipped out about bear hunts so they had a moratorium put on them for a while then the population exploded.

Old chart. Now they are in every single county.

I'm just glad we don't have polar or grizzly bears. Black bears are typically not aggressive.

All cases using 9mm or .40 were successful. Just sayin'.
Now which would you rather have if this was running at you? A rifle or a little pistol?

There cant be a case mad for a 9mm or .40 against a grizzly when 10mm and magnum revolvers exist.

Yeah I feel ok with my 10mm setup for whatever comes at me... again provided I can get it out and get a couple shots off.

I would really like to put a stalk on some pigs and shoot one at night with my bow. I want at least a .45 on my hip for that though

The two rounds I have in my mags are both 700 ft/lbs of energy.

Is it more lethal to get hit with the smaller, lighter bullet that's going faster or the larger, heavier bullet that's going slower?

Bigger air cavity behind the faster bullet so I'd say yeah.

Not to mention a bear has very thick skin and fat.. so I want the deeper penetration of the faster bullet. Also, my bullets are 140 grain and 220 grain.. so not that light. Hard cast will punch through a lot of fat.
