Stocks / taxes question -

So the company I work for is a French owned company. This year they are opening up the employee buy in program to North America for the first time and are matching our share purchase at 15% up to $1500. My concern is taxes since it is based in France. Has anyone else seen a similar situation before? Personally I think it is a good idea considering the size of the company but I am concerned about the tax hit on gains from France and then US taxes. It could be a real nice long term investment booster to buy in $1,500 a year while I work here could really add some long term returns.

Program specs - shares are offered at a discount to employees and matched at 15% up to $1,500. Once purchased the shares cannot be sold/ transferred for 5 years (with a small list of exclusion events that would allow it.)

Many stock options from companies are within the retirement accounts.

Is this not under any retirement account?
If not, its not uncommon and it's not a big deal, just purchase the stocks if you believe in the financials of the company.

It's only a tax hit when you sell the stocks. I pay 15% on my longterm stocks.

Yes, this is seperate from the retirement plan. The vesting, 401k, and longevity benefit plans are seperate. My concern is really if I will end up paying French and US taxes on these gains/ sells .

You might, but it's still not a big deal, a brokerage account like Fidelity already takes out the taxes upon the sale, I pay foreign taxes on stocks from companies traded on the NYSE.

That is good to know. In the current 5 year trend their stocks are up $11.51 /share. Not a big jump but I am getting them at a discount with matching so that helps too.

Correction - read the company doc wrong; stocks are currently at $11.51/share. This is up $8.56/share at 5 years ago.

Yep. Buy as much as you can reasonably afford.

You will pay taxes on it when you sell it. I have some foreign stocks that are part of mutual funds, etc. The brokerage that manages the account (i.e. Fidelity...or maybe it's the company that manages the fund? Either way, I don't see it until I file taxes) pays them automatically. The amount paid is listed on the tax forms that they provide. If it's just a straight stock and not part of a fund, I would assume that you would only pay taxes on the increase when you sell.

LOL. Yep. I've dipped my toe in with 3 of their recommendations and 1 is making up for the other 2. They are all too volatile. I like my consistent players. I feel bad for some of the younger guys following that thread and have sent a couple of PMs to some of the younger guys after they seemed to be following the other fish right into the bear's mouth.

I still don't recommend buying in, its very risky and unpredictable and you could lose it all. It's even a much harder decision to decide when to sell off, knowing it could spike to $200+ per share.

Exactly. I got in on their "recommendations" for GME, ZOM and ASO. Should have sold GME yesterday. Probably selling ZOM today if it gets back over my cost basis, and I actually like ASO.

I am staying away from AMC.

Thought I was going to sell off some yesterday, but trading stopped for AMC a few different times throughout the day, never executed, dangerous, or an omen to hold out, lol.

Sell off the initial investment and watch the "house money" burn?

It had such a run yesterday that I'd get out for fear of the rug being pulled out from under it.

Made a small profit on ZOM. It's still climbing, but could fall at any minute. I'll take my green and put it in something a little wiser.

So maybe I should think about selling this place.

Then what? Buying right now is hard. Almost have to be all cash and go way over the inflated asking price.

PSA for everyone.

It's real important to up your house insurance values if you have not done so already, replacement costs have skyrocketed, it's worth the few hundred dollar increase per year.

I already heard of someone who took a $250k loss on a house fire from a mutual friend.

I checked out "Invested" today on Hoopla. It's the book written by the 36 year old who explains Warren Buffet's first rule that @Taco Loco linked WAY back in this thread.

If you like audiobooks and pay for a subscription to Amazon's Audible, stop. Go to your local library and ask what digital service provider they use. Fort Worth used Libby and my current county uses Hoopla. Totally free and they have a good selection. Hoopla does audiobooks, e-books, movies and music....all for free, but you're limited to something like 6 check outs per month. I've never run out of "borrows."

And also, if anyone sees Bitcoin dipping below $31,667.00, please let me know. :) Anyone bit-coining? And if any of you think that bitcoin is not a tool, you may be mistaken. Then again... :)

And for the same reason that bitcoin has any value, rarity is the reason I picked this one up at auction:

I never traded it, but will soon start hypothetical trades in bitcoin etc, my youngest son (15) wants to learn and has a lot interest in crypto type trading/investing.

I am with you... up until about a month ago. I have joined one sub group of a mastermind that I am in with agents and wall street types (39 of us in the primary mastermind. In that group we talk about different strategies and different coins. I am sure that there is a better resource but for now my toe is in the water and I have made about 8 trades (all buying - no selling). My thoughts are two fold, this is part of my 5% Vegas portion of my portfolio and I think we would all agree that it will be here for the rest of our term here before we go to the meat grinder. :)

Sounds like a plan. I like to use yahoo finance for my fake trades, love the user friendly platform it provides.

Yes! I set up 100k fake accounts for my nephews to teach them. Yahoo is great for that.

On a side note, I just noticed that I have accumulated 200 sh of Lulu Lemon - that's a shit load of YOGA PANTS! lol
