Meh I'm not sold on diesel for a daily or offroad rig, they seem to crop up far more problems than they solve in both situations. I'm sure it's a torque monster but with a 4:1 case of just don't see the usefulness of it

Good point, does the ZR2 have a 4:1 case?
If I could get a great 30-40 mpg out of a diesel in an expo rig it would solve multiple problems.

That's my thoughts as well. Not a dedicated crawler, but something with enough grunt to pull a small trailer anywhere and good enough MPG rating that I don't worry when I have to travel further than 200 miles without carrying 20 extra gallons of fuel.
My main concern for it is this, its not a Toyota.

I've seen lots of small diesels claim high mpg, none have delivered much better that their gas counterparts once larger tires/armor/gear is added to them.

I have a friend with a diesel Grand Cherokee, lifted on 33's with armor/bumpers and he gets 30 MPG. Damn thing has 425+ lbs/ft or torque! I'll take that.

Sean brought up a good point today about communicating between rigs.
Something like this handheld would be a good idea. Plus the range and clarity are light years ahead of a CB.

Best money you will spend under $40. I would also recommend the 12v car adapter so you are not relying on recharging it nightly.

I don't mind buying something like this but I'm not at all interested in going through the whole licensing thing. I'm assuming there's some type of public channels these can be used on?

I may or may not have used it without a license. Just saying.
The official licensing part of HAM radio is what keeps stopping me. I may have found a way to get paid to get my license though; so maybe that will encourage me to do it.

Going back and forth over the legalities of HAM and the needs of trail comm - the convoy could just as easily use CB radios for communication as the group will never be overly disperesed. It would benefit the group to have one or two HAM radios available for emergency communications (if cell phone reception was not available).
