Before we bash building codes to hell that might actually be better than none at all can we all agree no one should be building more housing when CA cant even supply basic needs now??? They lack the #1 thing needed for life........water.

Not a good idea to keep expanding an already failed state in my opinion.

But they think they have it all figured out!

I watched that cabin build when they put it up. Pretty cool.

This guys a small builder on our side of the Canadian border. He builds some cool stuff. Always has his ear to the ground concerning pricing and does a ok job.

Heres a 30x30 shell he just did for 100k. If it was diy you could do it 100% right (heavily insulated much thicker radiant/passive solar slab) for same costs.

No one ever seems to use the suns free heat off grid unless its some hippy earthship. Little planning with cabins proper orientation to the sun + some different construction methods and utilities get cut in half for life.

The earths rotation about the sun has a lot to do with the effectiveness of the solar power. Where we live , you may benefit from the extended range for a max 6 months per year. Hardly seems worthy of the investment.

Just remember my friend, there are no free lunches to be had.

Solar effectiveness really depends on where you live. Almost every single house I saw in the Middle East had a black water tank on top of their house for hot water. It was solar heated hot water that did a pretty good job of it. Better use of geothermal is an interesting technology I have been looking at lately. One of my co-workers from Belgium is interested in off-grid living so our conversations tend to go that directions. The use of thermal and wind technology in parts of Europe is pretty impressive.

Maybe not but there are votes to be paid for by people that hate the people who get voted in.

You can do a passive house in Canada so while regional location dictates your options it's just a oppurtunity to go different routes.

Properly sized/located windows that shine on a large internal thermal mass (concrete/water/etc) make a HUGE difference.

One of the keys to me selling sun shades for commercial buildings was optimizing them for these exact situations. Suns higher in summer so we'd set them so only during winter would sun make it in.

Ton of very simple common sence things that require no machinery or moving parts. Just proper design

I make and distribute energy for a living. Stick to your glass panes buddy.

Also my resume and skill set speaks for itself @Oswego so I don’t really give a damn what you believe, meanwhile you are still fixing up a tool shed you bought 20 years ago, so I surely wouldn’t take any professional advice from an unemployed clown.

Another good book for having the environment work FOR YOU in damn near any environment - with or without nukes, glass or houses. ...okay, maybe not houses! lol ...but what the hell do I know! lol

Quit y'alls shit, can't we all get along have the dreams of building something we want or would like to build... regardless of power, passive or not with or without ridicule/resume of one another?
