When I was 5-7 the neighborhood moms would take turns putting 8-10 kids in a station wagon and taking us to a park. These days. There was never a fear of lawsuits for mishaps. Today you think twice of even helping a child for fear of being sued or worse yet, arrested.
--- I totally agree with you that it has become a society in which people are quick to pull the trigger. This of course has caused people to change their viewpoints and life styles. Now, in this case, if one of the mom's negligence was the cause of the death of a car full of kids would you deem in unfair for those families to seek damages? I mean of course no money will replace a child but I believe that if someone is the cause of another's death they should be held liable. People learn from mistakes, it is lucky when one can learn from the mistakes of others and not have to first hand.
During my 7th birthday party, my new friend bent over to pet our dog. Our dog bit the kid in the face. Although the dog had never been aggressive, we put the dog to sleep. When my family checked up on the child, the kid was proud of his facial scar - thought it made him look cool. - Today it would have been a law suit.
--- I'm the kid that got bitten in the face

. It definitely would have been a lawsuit but that does not mean that it would have been one that was won. A good attorney would tell them that and then they could make the decision to waste time and money or cut their losses. (Lots of reasons this case would not stick). You are right in that the majority of the population (and I am going to say mostly ignorant and uneducated) feels they are entitled to everything and should just grab an attorney and sue. If you look at the cases that actually make it and are carried out, they usually are for something substantial.
My father was hit by a tractor trailer fuel truck. He was thrown from his car about 50 feet and landed on a small plot of grass. He had 7 broken ribs, two broken arms and a broken leg. My father did not sue but the fuel company gave him a check for $42,000. He took that money and found the best public school system in our state, bought a home and enrolled us in that school. He then traveled 2 hrs one way to work so that his kids would get the best education he could get us. Today that would have been multiple millions in a lawsuit.
--- I'm not sure exactly what you are getting at here. Your dad just cut out the middle man and settled. That is what the majority of litigation amounts to these days anyways. Yes, your dad could have filed suit and made a lot of money but he apparently thought that it was worth $42k. I feel like, based on your statements above, that for this story to be supportive, your father would have had to not have taken any amount of money. Not suing or settling would have portrayed that everyone was not after money and filing frivolous law suits. I promise you though, every person on this forum, in that instance, would lawyer up and go for gold. Sadly, the times of saying "shit happens" and moving on has been destroyed. I do admire your father still for his actions. He certainly could have made WAY more money had he decided to get a lawyer and pursue but he seems to be a very humble fellow, a rarity in this day and age.
When I was sick, home from school, you would always see ads for truck driving schools, cosmetology schools, electronics schools, etc. Then 1977 came along and we 'progressed' by allowing attorneys to advertise their services. Nowadays those advertisements are replaced on how to sue your neighbor, your workplace and your mom.
--- I hate this. I loathe the companies that do this and do not think it should be done. These sleazeballs are the reasons that attorneys that actually want to make a difference and do good are lumped in with the shady ones.
Fast forward to the OJ Trial and Court TV. This started our current situation whereby there are many fake and real (Judge Judy and that the other one are the only ones that I know that are not scripted) court shows. Here we teach snowflakes that the only way to settle something is to SUE THE BASTARDS!!! And sadly it is all about TV advertising revenues - what better platform is there to advertise for lawyers? That is the only reason you can pretty much find a local court show during almost any hour that someone may be unemployed or home from work. Entertaining but it certainly has seemed to increase the number of lawsuits.
--- Same. Hate these things in their portrayal of the profession and the message they convey. Same as the advertisements.
I once thought I would go to law school to become a Patent Attorney. I had a few friends that talked me out of it.
--- Sounds like you would have made a good one.
Then you look at the way society looks at professions I am not the only one that has one that is not admired by many.
--- Was actually just talking to classmate about willingly joining a profession that most hate

.
I'm not saying it is an awful career choice, it's just one that requires a very thick skin. Sure there are different branches of the profession that can be better than another.
If you are going to thrive as an attorney - OWN IT.

I will not be the only one that might have that opinion. Do what you love and that is all that matters. Be the best that you can be and you will be a superstar. Don't GAF about what others say AS LONG AS YOU ARE CONFIDENT IN WHAT YOU DO. That's all.
--- Thanks dad?

jk. I have no doubt that you have your reasons for liking and disliking attorneys. I just did not understand the point of making our political debate into a personal attack of the profession I have chosen. Shit, political debates are fun and I believe they are great ideas; that is until they turn into a shit throwing competition and a stage for personal attacks.
