Recovery Gear - basic and advanced

Oh you guys. So I feel like this went to a "shit you just keep in your truck" rather than actual recovery gear. Deep cycle battery?

Well yea..... When my truck was running I didn't put gear into it every time I took it off road. I was prepared all the time. Driving home from work past a sand quarry and want to blow off some steam...pull right in.

Of course. I keep MREs,water, camping stuff etc. I'm saying that doesn't qualify as "Recovery gear". Just trying to keep the thread on topic (I know that's close to impossible on here lol)

Try running your winch hard with a shitty battery.

So you take an extra deep cycle to use just when you winch?
I have two deep cycles in my truck but they are always in there and hooked up. Not recovery gear but necessity gear to run the truck lol.

Sorry for being late for the party but the collective list is strong already.

In my truck I keep:
  • spare wheel bearing
  • 5 shackels
  • RTT :)
  • 55 watt Ham with 2 5 watt handhelds with 2 extra batteries and cigar lighter adapter
  • hi-lift
  • spare cv axle (sometimes I bring a rebuild kit too)
  • the special tool for closing toyota OEM clamps for things like boots
  • spare alternator
  • spare starter
  • spare starter relay
  • ensure I have two good batteries on long trips
  • jumper cables
  • spare fuses and any extra relays I may have
  • self vulcanizing wrap (2-3 rolls)
  • Full Sized Spare (on some runs two - unless we have a number of Toyota guys running 33s)
  • About 100 tire plugs and tire kit with ss wire (reminds me I need a new roll)
  • water filtration system
  • 20 gal of extra fuel (maybe overkill but some of the places I roam you can find people out of fuel or prices that are near 2x normal)
  • 5 gallons of water
  • fluids (I need to add some ATF just in case)
  • (something I don't have but want) Caps for brake lines - worked with some baja race teams that have them and they make sense. You basically screw them on to the end of a brake line so that it is sealed.
  • Bug out bag.
  • Bottle jack
  • Shovel
  • Lots of black gloves
  • Extra CV grease in squeeze tubes
  • Tree saver and stretchable tug strap
  • Working winch
  • ARB hose repair kit and extra line
  • siphon
  • AAA Premiere Card!!!!
  • Trunk Monkey/Sammich Maker/Belly Warmer :) or Hand Lotion

Any thoughts of a trailer for hauling some of that recovery/ rebuild gear?
No need here. I don't even have a tire gate. But then again, my refrig/slide is on a mount that I made that attach via the seat/seatbelt mounts. Sometimes I have half of the back seat in. Most of the times, my double cab is a two seater. :)

Sounds like mine... but mine is a 3 seater. 60% portion is taken up by fridge. Little one takes the rest. She likes the fridge as she can put stuff on top of it or lean against it and take a nap. :) Hell wife took the truck to her parents and grandmas place today because the weather was complete shit, and yes I guess she must have wheeled because it came back pretty muddy... but she stopped by the local butcher and loaded up the fridge with lots of goodness. So yeah, it has it's perks.

And if it sounds like over kill, just try to get help in the middle of the desert in Mexico. :)

Preparation all depends on where you are going. You are exactly right about being 100% prepared when you are in the middle of nowhere.
