Yes he can. One of the places people hang out is just off of a paved parking lot. Look up Father Crowley's Point.

When I was TDY in Alaska I got an incentive ride in the backseat of a F15D doing shit like that... it was pretty epic.. 90 minute roller coaster ride. It was January and we would pull out of the canyon and up and over these HUGE granite walls, well the sun had heated up the granite and thermals coming off the side of the cliff face caused the aircraft to shake pretty violently (we were damn close to the walls pulling up) .. kinda made me pucker up a bit.
