What would keep someone from cracking it open and changing the battery?

Prob not much - maybe legal red tape. You can send it back and they will do it for you.

You do need to register it with NOAA every two years ~ Not sure if they would go help an unregistered unit or not, but I can't see NOAA knowing what the status on your battery is. PLB is from England - you just need to register for your country.

For the amount of money they cost I would not even mess with it. Last thing I need is to be dying and my call not go out because I monkeyed with the battery. Pretty sure mine was sub $300 when I got it. Battery prob much cheaper to replace, but you would need to send it to England for that service. There are other companies that make PLB's but I like Ocean Signal and their support of the cospass sarsat and meosar satellite systems.

Not sure if cool or a flop, but if it works good - it would be pretty cool

pretty impressed with the forumn's ads lately. I know I break stones on the fat chicks, but most of them are amusing.....well besides all the liver ones telling me I'm going to die
