Thoughts on a pole barn type shop like @PSU Taco85 built vs a regular metal shop?

No way, I would not even consider using timber.

Put an offer on a house today. First one I've looked at that I can actually see myself not outgrowing anytime soon. No garage but it has a two car carport and plenty of land to build a 40x40 shop next year.

That's kind of what I was thinking. But I see more and more people putting up the wood ones here than the metal framed ones. Was thinking maybe there was something I wasn't seeing.

I'd get a kit from Mueller and be done with it. All you need is a slab, and they give you a bolt up kit.

Thinking about just building it out of steel beam. It would be way cheaper than a kit from Mueller for what I want, I think. I'd just have to have someone that knows engineery things tell me what beams I need to use.

Oh its on... be sure to include a 8x14 I beam down the center for a gantry crane. Or better yet.. two.. one down each side and have the gantry slide between them with multiple options.

I fully intend to. I can get the beam for scrap prices. An 8x14 beam 40 feet long would cost me around $40.

But calm down. It's all a pipe dream right now. I'm about a year away from being able to do it. Not letting myself do it until the GX is paid off.

True. I don't know what scrap prices have done with the tariffs. But still, it's wayyyy cheaper than buying from a steel supplier.

A couples years ago I could have gotten you some. Now it's a fucking pain in the dick for me to get it. I have to prove that it's for personal use and if they find out it's not, I can lose my job.

Yeah we had a guy a couple years ago making a business out of buying it for our price and then selling for a big profit. They couldn't fire him for it because it actually didn't say anywhere in the company's policies that you couldn't sell it. But now it does and they made the process a lot more difficult to get it.
