It was a roller coaster of a day hunting with my son for the first time. We saw about 12 driving to the spot. Bumped 2 more walking in and within 5 minutes of being in the stand 5 more came out including a mature, real wide buck that would be perfect. We do some shuffling in the stand to get into a better position but he walks off showing us his butt and turns broad side for about 2 seconds at 150 yards and slips into the brush.
A few min later another buck comes out of the brush where the other went in. He followed 3 doe to the feeder where I quickly realized he was a buck I had seen before with a split g2. After 10 minutes of waiting for a good shot and is clear of the does my son squeezed the trigger. Buck kicks his legs and goes into the brush and looked like he was hit good. We wait a few minutes and go down. Blood is in the feeder pen, on the fence and thats it. Found a good pile of blood 60 or 70 yards away and indicated he was headed to the neighbors so a few calls later and he is out there helping us look. 3 hours and no deer and no more blood. I make a few more calls and I get in contact with a guy that has tracking dogs. Shows up at 2:30, and by 3:30 we had the deer in hand. Turns out the bullet hit the feeder pen fence wire and sent shrapnel into the deer. He was actually still alive when the dogs got to him and had to put another round in him.
