It's basically gathering information from publicly available sources and stitching it together. There are some sites that offer this service for free and others are paid. If you want to take some time to reduce the availability of your information on the internet, here's a good article to go through.

When I was in college many moons ago my major was criminal justice and they were just starting to place analytics officers within larger departments. I took a crime intelligence analysis class that used a similar tact but also utilized the LE data base and it was the most fun I ever had in school. Hindsight being 20/20 - I should of gone down that road. Retirement at 45yo with 25 years in would of been sweet. Who knows..... the grass always looks greener from afar
