Wrong! I grenaded one driving down the highway at 65. They just suck. I've only ever destroyed one being hard on it... and it wasn't really that hard.

And it was at this moment the Silverback realized, he fucked up.

I think given that my 4R is 99.9% daily driver, an E-locker will do just fine for a few years. Maybe it'll get air lockers one day, but that's a ways in the future. Many other things it needs before that.

It's not even the e locker that's the problem, the entire third member is based on the old v6 design, intended for 1st and 2nd gen 4runners with a 3.0, Anything heavier or with more power is simply not going to hold up. IMO the 3rd gen and newer 4runners should have come with the 8.4

I blew up a 3rd with cryo'd gears and an ARB driving down the road...shit happens. I just bought an elocker, but I'm being more realistic this time around as I mostly use my rig for camping and "expo" purposes so there's no need to spend $2k on Fr & Rr diffs.

I think you'll be fine OP;)

It is not a war crime the first time.

I am trusting an e-locker in my '01 4Runnee because the tires are only 32s and it will not be a hardcore rig. It is for expo use and I prefer to not beat on it. My wife is still attached to it not having body damage.

I will admit I also have a rear tacoma 8.4 axle in waiting. I just don't want to convert to leafs yet.

I don't plan on ever getting much larger tires than 32s on this thing, so I think I'll be fine.

Since this is my DD that I want to get to 500k miles, I'm thinking I want to pull the e-locker apart, buy a rebuild kit from Yukon or other reliable source, pull the OEM gears out of my truck, and reinstall with E-locker and original gears. It'll be more downtime since I can't have a rebuilt 3rd member sitting there ready to go, but I'd rather trust my known-good gears with 95k miles than some unknowns.

Sounds like a good plan to start with!

Little bit of preventative maintenance today. Oil change and air filters.

Starting to do some research for the E-locker wiring. I'm sort of a wiring geek (wire up racecars at work) so I'm planning on making my own diff controller with an Arduino. Trying to find the proper connectors and pinouts.

Hmmm.. well I've destroyed 3 elockers. I changed my gear lube regularly and when I pulled the blown 3rd member's out the gears were not that color on any of them. They just had big chunks removed. Sadly I don't have any pics.

I'll just say "good luck and I wish you the best with your new purchase".
You know I can relate. E-locker delete for the win. :)

I have heard some insider quotes that would shock you regarding elockers. What comes to mind... would they/have they sold a HILUX (current vintage) with an 8 inch elocker? I will ask. :)

My guess is Heck no. They want repeat business in the rest of the world. Only here in NA, where we treat cars like disposable cameras can they get away with poorly engineered products and 20+ years of bad frames.

Got me a "RR DIFF LOCK" button off eBay for cheap.

Wiring it up should be pretty simple. Green & white are the light, and blue & yellow are the switch contacts. Button in, contacts closed. Button out, contacts open.
