The elockers were 50/50 shot at being set up correctly from factory. We swapped a bunch out on warranty due to howling from being burnt. Best thing we atarted doing was checking setup on new ones before installing. A well set up e locker can handle 39.5 iroks and stand a 4runner on one wheel without breaking. Same diff is now being used in a dd rig. But simce it is set up tight it requires strict service, if it were set for mud/dd service would less strict. But we use only yukons and full rebuild kits for e lockers ! So do it right it will last.

Good to know; I wonder if that's what happened to this one in the first place? The guy I bought it from said it was replaced under warranty.

If you could elaborate on that, or give me some more to read up on, I'd appreciate it.

They didnt tell us much in the tsb for warranty as to why. But we were able to figure out some had been set to tight and other loose, we also found bad bearing setups. I think due to the different size bearings on either side. I would have to get the note book out to look at back lash numbers, we dont do as many as we us to. Companies mass producing them and using cheaper parts make it not worth the time.

Other issue mentioned was motor failure, which is due to excessive water crossings or mud. If you do this you must service it and get a guard for it !

I still have a few diffs and parts on the shelf if you need anything i can look.

They are pretty easy to service. I had to rebuild the one I used to have once. Pretty straight forward. Not sure about waterproofing them unless you use copious amounts of silicone. Think BIG fake titties!

So when you set up new ones what would you shoot for spec wise to get them to hold up to big tires? Seems like less backlash would wear the gears excessively and upping bearing preload would just chew up the bearings faster for no gain

There is a wide spec range for backlash, we tightened it up to reach the best setting without being to tight and wearing the gears out. We did it over many different setups to get best numbers. But yes to tight or loose and gears get toasted, but also pinion shim depth and preload play big rolls in that to. Along with proper bearing installation. Application is the determining factor in all of our setups. We came up with a crawler only setup, crawler and slight street use, crawler and dd use, weekend crawler/ exploerer and mainly dd, mud truck and dd, and finally dd camping. All have close to same numbers but different preloads on pinion setup and backlash.

Would you be able to share some of those numbers? At least the "weekend crawler/ exploerer and mainly dd"

Let me consult the book, but numbers are the easy part. We have to stock a lot of shim packs, and some odd balls to get it right. Which can be coslty.

Minor update, just ordered a Prinsu roof rack through the GB on T4R.org. Pretty excited, the OEM rack has been taking a beating from the RTT coming on and off, and it'll be really nice to strap things to the roof in front of the tent.

They are really good racks and look the best IMO. There was a guy that rolled his Tacoma in Moab and he was able to resell the rack since it held up to the truck rolling on top of it.

I'm really excited about it, I really like the design and they seem super beefy. And it looks like the cross-rails are industrial-style aluminum extrusion, so I should be able to just buy hardware to attach things to it from Misumi or McMaster. :D

Not to derail this thread, but hey its TOR. Anyone know exactly how high the Prinsu rack sits above the roof of a taco? I want to ensure I can park in the garage should I can go that route.

@SMKYTXN should be able to answer that question
