I went to pick up the reassembled spindle at the dealership - they forgot/ missed the ABS ring so I had to go back an hour later and pick the whole thing up properly assembled. Once home I swapped out the old LBJ pretty easily. The UBJ on the other hand was not in bad shape so I was going to leave it alone; except it refused to go back in and now the boot is ripped apart. So I am getting a cheap one real quick to run for a little bit till I can replace both upper ball joints properly. I really just want this thing back on the road right now.

Go back and check this LBJ bolts in a couple hundred miles. Then again after another couple hundred. Bad things happen if you don't...

So the wheel bearing swap was successful. The howling sound is gone and the 4Runner is riding nicely on new upper and lower ball joints on that side.

Update: spoke too soon. At 55 mph and up there is some noise still. I will dig deeper tomorrow; I'm beat today. While I was cleaning up the mess from the work I noticed the CV axle boots are starting to show some dry rot. I guess I need to plan to replace them before they let go on me.

Haha I don't blame you. Seems like I am doing some much over due maintenance on this rig. Better now in the driveway than on their trail.

Anyone have a write up or link to rebuilding a CV axle for a 3rd gen 4R or 1st gen Taco?

Been running some wires for the last few nights to prep as much as I can.
Installed this panel in the back cargo area.
Volt read out, dual USB, and 12v cig plug.

Did all this in prep for a fridge, reverse lights in bumper (not here yet), and CB. Ran 8 gauge from the battery to the center console. Did a 6 bank Blue Sea block under the console and ran the power from there.

Planning to make a slide for the fridge with some server slides I got for free from work.

So I swapped tires with my sammich maker's Tacoma to road test the 4R for noise again. The good news is the only humming now is from the tires. The bad news the old CV axle puked grease everywhere.

So later today I am swapping in a new one. Will rebuild the old one and some axles I bought from Blake for spares.
