What have you done to your ride lately?

So let me ask the dumb question that seems to be covered at nauseum on TW.

Will 285/70/17s rub on my Tacoma? There is so much BS and garbage over there that it's hard to weed out the BS and garbage. I'm pretty sure the general consensus is "yes, they will rub."

I have the FJ trail wheels, so that should give me a more favorable back spacing than the OEM wheels. I don't mind cutting a little if I need to. I'm mainly wondering if I need to replace the UCAs. I mean...I know I should replace the UCA anyway, but is that necessary at the same time?

Yes, you'll rub on the body mount at full compression and with your wheels at full lock. Also, you'll rub on your upper control arm as well when aired down. So you'll need to replace those as well. Do you need to do it at the same time? I would say yes, that way you can get a wheel alignment for your new tires and new upper control arms at the same time.

That's pretty much what I thought.

I also need to replace the LCAs. Stupid Dorman/Autozone crap uses the WORST LBJs. At this point, I'm replacing them once a year. At least it is under warranty, but still. 1 year is not an acceptable fail rate.

Got my Tacoma street tuned today. It makes nice smooth power all through the rev band, no knock/pinging anymore, and it really pulls hard over 4000rpm. I elected to have them do it on the conservative side to be safer. He said I could probably squeeze 10-20 more horsepower out of it if we kept going, but where it’s at now should be safe operation from sea level all the way up to the Rocky Mountains. I don’t want to have to hassle with flashing different tunes depending on where I might be driving, so I’m happy with this. Peak boost is 8.6psi and we’re suspecting mid 200s in horsepower. Probably 240-250 on a nice cool day.

Toytec was great to deal with. Didn't have Kings in stock and everywhere I called wont have any for 1-2 months. Went with Toytec 2.5 Alumaseries front and rear. Better suited set up. For my weight and rebuildabe.

speakin of shocks,

yep, got rid of some rear excons myself today, one was leaking and was failing, bought these 5+ years ago, but the shocks didn’t even make to a 3rd oil change.

The rears are super beefy. The fronts are a nice upgrade with a 2.5 shaft and 700# spring. They rose the front about 1/4". The rears are a good but stiffer and should really help the ride having the extra weight.

I was surprised when I got mine. The rear shocks were super beefy but weighed almost nothing because aluminum. Only thing I didnt like about them was that the shaft on the rears was a bit smaller diameter than the OMEs I took off. But I'm not hard enough on it for them to cause a problem anytime soon.

I think I'm about to put those on my truck in 285/70/17.

One of (if not) the lightest AT tires in that size and has the severe snow rating. I've read a ton of really good reviews on them with the only real negative comments being that they suck in the mud or deep snow...you know, the things that just about every tire is going to suck at.
They must be pretty light because my mpg didn't drop off at all like I figured it would. Also zero road noise.
Well after putting close to 400 miles on these tires so far I have no complaints. I lost a little avg mpg city/highway mix, but not enough to regret the purchase. On the highway they ride nice, little to no road noise and the handling is actually better then the factory michelins it had on it. Have not used them "off road", but in the deep sand in a few patches on my dirt road they seem to do well and on loose gravel they hold the road well. They do pick up and sling timy rocks but thats expected.

FYI I have a "new" F150 FX4 work truck with the 3.0 powerstroke so my ave mixed mpg was about 24.5 now its 22.7 so I'm not bitching (awesome little engine btw, plenty of torque).

Took all of my skids off today. It started with just the gas tank in preparation for the dealer to do a fuel pump recall but it turned into all of them. I thought I could hear 1 rattling on the frame and I was right. Nut inside the crossmember of the front plate had a weld come off and cut the bolt head to get it off. Thinking riv nut or something to get threads back in there for a bolt to secure the plate.
