Just hard wire it, we pay good money for auto insurance here in Texas while installing China products on our trucks...

Modern anti-Japanese sentiment from the Chinese is making sure Americans install China products on Japanese products!

Serious. look at the specs on this switch. HD-Series Heavy Duty On-Off Battery Switch - Blue Sea Systems

You talk about shorting out due to wiring, put a shitty switch in there and you definitely will.

Decent article comparing winches and how many amps each can draw.

All about Winches : on Off-Road.Com

Warn M8000 at an 8000 lbs pull is 425 amps, Ramsey seems to have the lowest for the 8000 lbs group (granted they only showed results from 2 mfg).

tex

That's Mr Asshole to you
Mine can draw 625 or something high like that.

What model did you get? I'm pretty sure my 12.5 won't pull that.
Edit: Mine pulls 530 and its 12500 lbs of pull.

Warn vr8000
Just confirmed. 457 amps at max pull.

So not close to 625. That switch would still work for you.

In-cab winch controller FTW, fuck wireless...one more battery to die in the middle of no-where. Plus when I am winching I want to be in the vehicle with my foot on the brake if I am recovering someone, or behind the wheel if I'm recovering myself.

This x 1,000,000,000!!!!!!

Seems all the videos I see these days with people being recovered are by people who break 99.9% of the 2 fundamental rules of recovery. The manual controller forces one to be somewhat safe unless they jump out of the truck. I see the guys with wireless all over the place outside the trucks. Ass should be in driver seat with the hood up.

Probably not, I don't do it with my synthetic line.

Kind of what I was thinking. The biggest reason to move to synthetic is for the increased safety over steel cable. Otherwise I would save the cost and run steel cable.

Synthetic is also about 25 lbs lighter than a similar sized steel cable. So in the overall picture of a winch and its total weigh its more than a 25% savings. I'll take that as well.

With synthetic line is the hood up still needed?

I would. Should be standard practice regardless of the cable type IMHO.

For example: D ring is attached to synthetic winch line on one side and to a tow point. Tow point weld fails. Now you have the d-ring + tow point flying back at your face at mach 2. When those lines snap in the middle they don't go flying. Put some steel on one end with 20k of force and I'm not so sure the steel is going to drop at your feet like syn line under it's own weight. This is 100% theoretical so when in doubt - go safe.

Its my understanding is that the synthetic line stores no energy so it would still drop to the ground.

From the demonstrations and examples I have seen even with a weight at the end the synthetic cable retains no energy and falls flat. Sounds like a good test to setup and experiment with though.

And I wonder why my first batt was toast in a year. That's also when I was using that Warn Vtwin compressor!

I totally forgot you had that thing. LOL

My Oasis compressors (I have 2) will draw 200 amps at full tilt boogie. They will also do 9 CFM at 100 PSI.. someone says they Viair or ARB air up fast ain't seen shit. But they weigh 45-50 lbs each. Both are just collecting dust now, Motors in each are on the fritz (melting 200 amp fuse blocks or circuit breakers), Oasis wants (wanted 5+ years ago) $700 to replace them. Fuck that, went with an ARB dual unit for refilling tires or tools and a small unit for lockers.

I saw some poly rollers a long time ago.. don't recall who sold them though.

Daystar - I have them. I'm just reluctant to cut my bumper up to comply with his request! lol
