Winchcraft: The Dark Art

AKA: The Reverse Winch.
I'd heard legends of this and struggled to wrap my mind around it for a solid week whilst thinking about it off and on. Well, bit the bullet and decided to google it and see how it works. Pretty damn cool actually. Makes sense when you really look at it but it's still mind bending. Short video but a great demonstration. Anyone ever try this?

Only reason I was so interested in this is because I go back and fourth on buying a winch for the Tacoma. I get VERY close to doing it and then I think, "What if I need to get pulled out backward? Kinda fucked..." but I guess that's not 100% true.

Ive done it with trees in the trails when you have limited space to clear them, never done it 'to' a vehicle

Anybody have thoughts on running a disconnect switch/contractor on the supply line. Recently had a buddy who had his winch inadvertently “turn on” and bend his front bumper and snap the winch line. Thinking maybe a disconnect between the supply to the field would be a good practice, granted it adds another failure mode and increased resistance slightly on the line

I have a switch inline between the winch and battery.

thanks. I figured it might be worth the risk, given 99.9% of the time I don’t need the winch, that the switch would provide a little peace of mind. I don’t like having a 00 gauge unfused wire going straight to the bumper.

Which switch did you go with? Winch can pull 4-500 amps.. most of those cutoff switches are only rated to 300 or so.

I haven’t bought one yet, still doing some research. I might test my winch with the brakes on to see how much current it pulls to get an estimate, and also check the manual to see if the LRA listed. but thinking of going with one of these depending on what amperage my 9.5 warn is expected to output max:

That's Mr Asshole to you
Its a marine battery cut off switch. Can't remember what the rating is but I want to say its 600A

realized you were asking @tex not me lol

just saw on their site for a warn 9.5xp the max amp draw is 482 amps and to maintain that HD switch rating you need to run dual 4/0 cables which I’m not planning on doing, so I’ll probably go with the 9003e seems to be the best for a winch disconnect application.

When I get the 4Runner I'm going to be redoing some of the wiring to bring it up to my liking. A cutoff switch is definitely going to be added.

Makes sense, 600A rating for 5 minute.. If you need more... stop.. have a beer.. let it cool down.

I'd do a Blue Sea switch... but would be a bit leery of China knock off.

I need to brush up on my rigging skills before I attempt to use the new winch. Also need to invest in some new recovery gear to go along with it. Thinking a Treaty Oak order is going to happen. And a good quality snatch block.

master pull makes a nice one for synthetic lines, a little pricey but it’s never a good idea to skimp on recovery gear.

I had Masterpull Superline on my M8000.. awesome winchline.

this is the snatch block I use, looks like it goes for around $110, def a quality piece. I want to eventually replace my winchline too since my line is 10 years old, granted it doesn’t see much daylight these past few years lol

Scroll to the end of this video and this is probably the last time I used it, back when I shattered my ADD tube on yellow jacket at rausch creek

Ok well I decided on the mini series switch which is rated at 50 amps less than the e-series (300 amp continuous), but still plenty of rating to be able to do some occasional winching. I liked the fact that this had a slightly smaller profile as well as having a case that houses/covers the back terminals. With real estate at a premium in the engine bay, I think this will work out better for my application. m-Series Mini On-Off Battery Switch with Knob - Red - Blue Sea Systems
