Winchcraft: The Dark Art

The really funny thing is that all the knots can be diy'd with some basic hand tools. Just lop off your old hooks and diy a loop or monkey fist.

I suspect a hammock guy, rigger, or sailor came up with these designs.

In hammock camping it's all typical common knowledge stuff we have been using for a decade. Same shit just smaller scale. Sailors using for decades. Riggers not so much due to liability/standards
I had to learn them in the Merchant Marines. It's not hard just takes a few good instruments and patience and you could easily make your own.
Hell, grandma's knitting needles would work.

There is a new Freedom winchline that doesn't have a hook on it.. just a built in soft-shackle on the end. Pretty slick! Just $$$

They insisted...

Yankum has a similar one and it also has an optional fairlead that is pretty snazzy. But damn you are close to $800 into it when done.

It is not a war crime the first time.

I am fine making that section a little shorter. My thought is this would be nice when needing another 50' or working around a muddy area where I would prefer to not get my winch line involved. I could park my 4Runner back a bit farther and sacrifice this line instead.

there are plenty of how to videos for splicing and repairing them. Fellow I know from around here makes and sells small “soft shackles” and I’ve watched him make the loops. Pretty easy once you’ve done a few but certainly takes a little practice.

The guy that owns Yankum Ropes did a video on it as well. I thought it was kinda cool that he basically shows you how to make a thing that he sells.

Thanks. Will have to give it a few tries and then test them really hard.

We used to do that with ski rope. You could probably pick up a ski rope on craiglist or marketplace for cheap. I don't think they are all that much new. Might be worth it for practice before going all in on the winch rope.
