Same guy I bought the T-bars off of has a 4.88 front diff with a Detroit true track, he is asking $300 plus shipping but it has been for sale for awhile & I think I can get him lower. He actually PM'd me about it. What do you guys think? I wouldn't be able to install it until I got a R&P for the rear. I think If I can get it for $250-300 shipped then I would do it. Opinions on the price?

Sounds like a good deal. Price is way less than the cost of gears + locker + install.

Could you enlighten me as to what a True-trac is & how it works? All of my experience is with lunch box lockers. Would a true-trac be unmanageable on the street? Surely it would be hard on my CV's, but I can live with that.

It's a good price, but I'd rather have a locker due to the fact that one of the front tires is almost guaranteed to go airborne when the extra traction is needed.

The truetrac is a gear driven limmited slip diff. It will have no effect at all while the hubs are unlocked.

Cool, so a true-trac is a good option for a front diff? Not as effective as a full locker but better than nothing. I'm going to google the price for one new.

Thanks guys. I think I am going to tell him $250 shipped & see what happens. Start low & I'll meet him in the middle. Like I said he has had it listed for a couple months & he PM'd me about it. He doesn't log into the board very often, but he gave me his number.

Cool

I've never really had much interest in LSD diffs before, but I was reading the manual for the Tru Trac, and it looks like if works alot like an auto locker.

I could also think about it as on the conservative side a R&P set would be at least $150 & install would be at least $100 so what ever I pay over $250 is for the true-trac. Even if I paid his asking price of $300 + shipping from Tennessee ($50?) I would get the LSD for $100. I am sure I can talk him down on that. Lets face it 4.88 gears are in my future anyways right?

I say buy it, If you end up wanting a front locker its not that hard to swap carriers if the gears are already set up.

I have a Tru Trac in the rear of the 4Runner and for 95% of the trails you would swear its a locker.

Nothing noticeable... I swore it was a locker the first 2 days I wheeled it. The 3rd I seized a tire in between some rocks and discovered it was not a locker. But its pretty damn impressive.

Some pics of my Downey 26mm torsion bars. The guy I bought them from was nice enough to give me all of his orginal parts that he didn't need so that gave me the chance to clean up and paint all of the parts before I started taking things apart. The bars themselves where in great shape, I barely even needed to wipe them down. I was glad to find them & happy to pay $100 for them since I have always been a huge fan of Downey products & they are no longer in business. I got these installed yesterday with some help from Mauzer, Thanks bud! I didn't take any after pics, I'll try to get some today.
