That's Mr Asshole to you
Walked out to leave for work and flat tire on the wife's 4runner. Change it and still got to work before my boss. Stupid nail on the very edge of the tread by the sidewall.

4Runner update:

I got new headlights, tail lights, corner marker light, trailer hitch receiver, and gear shifter installed. That shifter was such a pain in the rear and it took nearly an entire day, but it is finally all back together. I drove it around this evening and the rig drives well!

What’s left to do:

• I sealed up the washer fluid tank today, so tomorrow I’ll see if it still leaks.

• New bushings for the gear shifter so it doesn’t shake around like a hot dog in a hallway.

• Oil change

• Maybe replace the trans pan gasket to stop the leak. I have always heard that you shouldn’t change trans fluid at high mileage if it hasn’t ever been changed and I don’t know the history on this rig. I don’t want to drop the pan and then add fresh fluid and start developing problems shifting. Anybody have any thoughts on this?

Well not fixing the trans is just asking for a problem when you need it least. Save the old shitty fluid and put it back in. :D

You are going to need to replace the trans fluid at some point. Just pull the band aid off and deal with it. I had a Dakota RT that the trans was shitting the bed, I replaced the fluid and it worked fine. Then I traded it in. Not sure if there are any words of wisdom in that. Sorry.. its late and I'm still drinking. Ask @taco4x4rar ... where the fuck is he?

Whoever told you that bs about the transmission is full of shit lol.

Flush the entire system including the torque converter and fill it with fresh fluid that's factory spec.

I dealt with transmission issues for a few years in my '01 4Runner. I ended up having to replace it because the previous owner abused it way too much. If all you are dealing with is a leak then I would not worry about changing the fluid. Drop the pan and fix it sooner than later. Mainly because it is a lease rig so you will not remember to check and top off the transmission fluid every time you use it (or other people use it) so at some point it is going to get used with low fluid - that will be the starting point of problems. Swap out the gasket and replace the filter while you are in there. If you really want to have some fun put in a Transgo shift kit - it will shift a lot firmer but run a bit cooler too.

How you gonna drop the pan etc and not "worry" about changing the fluid. I'm glad none of yall work in my damn shop lol

If it has a leak it is already getting a fluid change. Just real slow.

And if you get another opening for a guy that only comes in once a week you let me know.

Oh? That makes me rest easier.

Not putting a shift kit in this thing, haha.

This was the stem of my whole question. I had been led to believe changing the fluid at high mileage was bad, but I guess that’s only true if using a vacuum system to suck the old out.

I modified my trailer hitch to be a “high clearance” hitch since I do not have a rear bumper. Before, the hitch was hanging down almost a foot below the bottom of the tailgate. Looks nice now, and will protect the bottom edge of the tailgate from getting bent on ledges or stumps.

I also replaced the shifter bushings for the auto shifter. There were zero remains of the old bushings, and the shifter would shake around like a hot dog in a hallway. It’s rock solid now.

Interior is 100% back together and look at that nice new shifter. It took me forever to find one, and the first one I found was the correct color!

Not pictured is my junkyard washer fluid tank that has been sealed up and ready for instal. The rear wiper is messed up and doesn’t always stop in the correct position, and you’re unable to roll the window down (and thus unable to open the tailgate) without the wiper in the stowed position. I put electrical tape over the wiper post so it won’t twist and turn on the rear wiper. Easy fix there. It took me almost 10 minutes of playing with the switch to get it to stop in the correct place. I don’t need it anyway, haha
