Update again -

Countdown for upcoming March 2022 trip to BBRSP.

Need to do -
1) rear axle seal - driver side - parts in garage; have to find
2) replace LBJs - ordered 11 Jan - Done
3) oil change/ filter cleanup
4) full size spare tire setup - looking for 17" steel rim
5) replace fuel filter

Want to do -
1) shift kit install in transmission - need 6 qts of trans fluid
2)

This afternoon I was delivering some firewood to a friend that needed some this week and my 4Runner was sounding pretty rough. I checked the basics but will see how it sounds after the oil change. The supercharger is pushing a rebuild so maybe that is it? But I do not have the time to shut it down for sending it off before the BBRSP trip. Will see how it sounds over the next few times I drive it. All the fluids look good.

The big list push has started. The shift kit is tomorrow with replacing all the transmission cooling hoses, then on to rear axle seal, with the fuel filter being last since I can knock it out real quick during the week if I have to push it back.

Check for a groove on your seal retainer. There is a cheat where you can flip it 180° so it rides on a new spot without having to buy a new one. If you put a new seal in with a groove in the retainer the leak will recur in short time.

I bought some newer seals that are supposed to be better about not leaking. Since it was the first side I did I am willing to accept I did something wrong on it.

Woke up feeling rough and that was the high point of the day. I got a late start on the shift kit but did manage to get some done today. The hard part has been done and the valve body is torqued back in place. Tomorrow morning I will finish buttoning it up and let the gasket maker dry while I am changing out the transmission cooler hoses. Hopefully some meds tonight will let me make tomorrow more productive.

Post shift kit install is done. Smiles per gallon... smiles per gallon. It hooks up and moves out a bit better and shifts firmer as expected. It is not going to shave a second off the 1/4 mile time but it does shift better, hold gear a little longer, and make the transmission run cooler. All wins with the supercharger.

I will give it a couple tanks to see if it bumped my mpg again. When @balakay did the transgo install it upped his 1mpg across the board which matched the first time I did it.

Making good progress so far today - rear seal is done and figured out the full size tire options for mounting (drop pressure and pull it backwards with strap). Now to get the front sway bar back on with QD mounts.

Only the fuel filter is left now. I cannot find my flare wrenches and did not find any local; hopefully Saturday I will get a set. Otherwise I will wait for the fuel filter till I get back from this trip. But it is nice to have pretty much everything done.

I'm fairly certain my husky flare nut wrenches were in stock @ HD.

I think you are in the Granbury area. Website shows them in stock in Weatherford.

Yep, Weatherford is my goal on Saturday. I have to go up there to get my phone repaired so it will be on my list.

Log way around today but I did get the flare nut wrenches today. The Weatherford YouBreakIFix is closed so I ended up having to go to Burleson to get the phone fixed. Since I was already over there I hit up the local Home Depot for the wrenches. Since I still wanted to check another store in Weatherford I did a highway miles test with the 4Runner with the RTT. Today we having a strong crosswind but the rig still average 15.5 mpg with 25% city / 75% actual highway @ 70 mph driving. This is good news with fuel prices over $4 a gallon for premium.

Decided to put off the fuel filter replacement until after the trip. I did not want to push my luck and have something screw up less than 24 hours prior to rolling out. I did a 45 mile test drive yesterday with the RTT on top with a strong crosswind. The results were still 15.5 mpg so I doubt a new fuel filter will give me a noticeable bump. Not worth the risk at this moment.

Now for loading up.

I had to double check everything; seems like we are missing something. But nope; just getting better and better with practice. The passenger row has the camp stove box, Milwaukee packout tools, and a few other smallish things. Plenty of room for picking up firewood once we are closer.

Looks like I may have a repair issue that needs addressing soon. About two months ago I was driving home from the airport and it seemed like the engine lost power for a split second; but the RPMs and speed did not move so I figured it was my imagination. This happened again a few weeks ago so I started to try to see if I could track it down. Last night coming home from working on the pig killing field it did it four or five times within 20 minutes.

So the research and digging over the last few weeks points to a bad throttle position sensor. The way the throttle body is designed it is not an individual sensor that can be replaced; but instead the whole throttle body gets replaced.

Saving the best part/link I have found so far.

That's Mr Asshole to you
Didn't realize TB were that much for these things. Back when I had a mustang a bigger TB was under $200, and that was for a Ford Racing part.

From what I have pieced together the issue is there is a sensor that is a non-replaceable part in the assembly. Overall hard to complain with it having around 375k miles on it at 21 years old.
