Ordered some Pelican ice packs to try out. Got the 1#, 2#, & 5# ice packs to see which fit my coolers best.

I have some ice packs I got for free but they are leaking after repeated use. These Pelican ones are supposed to fit in the bottom of my coolers and are supposed to extend ice life by 1-2 days.

Reminds me I need to do an ice pack update from the ones I tested by buying one of each - they all suck so avoid them. lol

Think I posted about buying them 2 years ago and forgot the update......the only ones that didn't leak are super small and basically useless

So stick with a gallon frozen jug is what I interpreted from that update.

lol

My dad always uses old plastic juice jugs for ice packs. He's been doing that for has far back has I can remember.

That’s all we have used, it works, free and repurposed materials.

I almost bought some of those ice blocks, they can be pricey for larger ones, the only advantage I have seen so far, is that those ice packs/blocks freeze quicker than using water in the plastic jugs.

True. Dad keeps a ton of them pre-froze in his deep freeze and swaps the out every day, but you got to have the space.

+ with frozen water you can drink it when it melts so it's a win win

Which ones did you buy again? I think I remember you having the Cooler Shock ones at some point. What problem did you have with them? I've been using mine on a weekly basis for a few years now and never had an issue with them.

Holy molly.....was 4 years ago when I pulled the order up lol

every single pack ended up leaking with the exception being the "Bentgo" 4 pack and I still have them. Same thing for expending in the middle and not maintaining their shape - everyone did it except the Bentgo brand. Same reason I think they ended up all leaking eventually (stress cracks from flexing).

Forgot to mention every Kong cooler I have will allow condensation to build around the drain plug on the exterior making it look like the drain plugs are leaking. Ive seen and heard of a few brands doing this including the Pelican's I almost got before I found the Kong brand. Thermal bridges will do that I guess, but I wasn't thrilled to see it.

My typical set up for rain car camping, less the extra hammock on the right + the red table/chair that are my buddy's.

Multiple Hammocks = spider web of trip lines so we condensed them into one zone to lesson night time face plants on the site

debating getting my nephew who just turned 18 last week a PLB for christmas.... He's been out riding motorcycles solo and boating solo. I know how many times I avoided death with razor thin margins at his age when I was solo.... Biggest factor is if I spend the coin will he actually take it with him.

pricing is dropping on the model I have.

Was waiting to see some Overland build that cost 30k with all the bells & whistles. I like that he didn't do that and took a minimalist approach.

I was surprised to see he did not even have a simple awning on it. I would have expected that to be a staple of living out of the vehicle every day all year.

same here. only things I can think of is lack of budget or he doesn't want to dray any undue attention to the truck. He's got the same exact set up as my sister ~ older Sequoia with a roof top box.
